Southern California - August 12th San Diego Can't Make the Cool Breeze (or training for it) Century

Bikeforums.net is a forum about nothing but bikes. Our community can help you find information about hard-to-find and localized information like bicycle tours, specialties like where in your area to have your recumbent bike serviced, or what are the best bicycle tires and seats for the activities you use your bike for.
I was doing intervals there today. By the end of the 2nd one, my leg felt like it was going to cramp up, so I cut it short. Intervals suck. They're the work of the devil.
You should've stopped by, I was riding Jet Skis/bikes/talking jeep with the guys I wheel with. Recumbent was leaning against the back of the RV most the day, we were where the short loop rejoined the long loop.

Thanks Dan for organizing a fun ride, and it was a pleasure to ride with all of you who were out there today. And Dan and Tracie, the proprietors of Chez Indolent, never disappoint. Thanks for hosting a very enjoyable BBQ.
When I caught back up at the school after San Dieguito, and I hadn't seen you guys, I knew some organization went on. :)
Not really much organization. Just Jason (the other one) leading the way for a while, then Garry picking up the tempo when he caught up to the front. No need for much organization when between the two of them, they're more than capable of pushing the pace well beyond what I can sustain even in their draft.

I'm sorry I couldn't join on this, but am anxiously awaiting pics! :)
Sorry Mary, I didn't have my camera today. It was part of the whole slacker mentality of only doing 1/2 the ride I had going.
Great ride everyone. Thanks to Dan and Tracie for being such great hosts. It was also cool to meet some people for the first time.

Had I seen the bike, I would have. I had my head down a lot though and I was grimacing with my HR through the roof.
Just wanted to thank Dan for the bike route today. I had to quit a little early due to a mechanical. Anyhow, outside of the early race pace (23+), it was rather enjoyable. Don't think anyone brought a camera, however with the pace we going I don't think there would have been time to take pics. Thanks to Jason for waiting for me on the bottom of Torrey.

Sorry about your wheel. :( Glad you got back okay.

had an awesome time. great seeing everyone as always, plus a couple of new(to me) faces. adam, mark, and the new forum recruit, jeff. the first 50 miles had a great pace, then we backed it off for most of the second half through the bay area to check out the sights, etc.
dan and family - thanks a million for the great food and hospitality. hope we can do it again :)

Great ride! Thanks again Dan for organizing the ride as well as for the bbq. :)
The first 50 miles was quite brutal, but I did manage to not fall too far behind... or at least I thought so. :o Nice riding with you, Mark (markw), for the time we rode together while getting lost twice to find the start of the Mt Soledad climb. Thanks Jason (Jschen) for pulling most of the way on the 2nd half.
Now I'm seriously deciding which ride I should do for Cool Breeze.
Ride stats:
- 107.43 miles
- 4107 ft
- 7h25m ride time including traffic stops
- 14.5 mph avg (incl traffic stops)

Mary, word has it that you've been training secretly. :D
Does word have it that I'm training with aliens too? Cause that could be interesting. :D
NO PICS! :( I was looking forward to the bf folk in spandex. I've so been cheated. But I'm glad you all had a good time. :)
Now I'm seriously deciding which ride I should do for Cool Breeze.
You've gotten a LOT faster recently. If I were you, I'd go for the double metric. You can do it. Just pace yourself at a more reasonable pace--ie not like our first 50 miles today--and you'll do just fine. It's good to stretch one's limits every once in a while. Oh, and get that 12-27 cassette onto your PowerTap wheel already.
Think about it... you're WAY faster than when you did Poway Century last year, and that was a pretty hilly 106 mile ride.

Since you bailed on this ride, we've all subconsciously decided not to take any pics. :D

Thanks, Jason.
BTW, congrats, Patrick (dapitbill69) on your first century!!!
Yes, congrats Patrick! You rode great all day!
So who crashed? If you snub the San Diego ride, you don't get the gory details.
Well, since you're a mod, and you can bane me for witholding information, I couldn't make it over a rairoad track and scaped my left elbow, hip, knee and bartape.
Thanks Tracie and Dan for your wonderful hospitality.
And, as usual, seeing and riding with the BF group was great.

Great ride! As mentioned, the group was hauling ass for the first half.
It seems we sampled all of SD on this ride (good and bad)... even the ferry. Mark's recumbant lived up to the repuation - a little slow on the ascents, but wicked on the descents. Great draft... if you could keep up.
Thanks, Dan for organizing it. The BBQ was excellent. He and Tracy make some MEAN burgers.

Thanks again Dan for planning the route and you and your family's hostility afterwards.
Ian - Gad to hear you got back OK.
Frank - Hope the knee and elbow feel OK tomorrow.
Good meeting a couple new (to me) BF riders today. We even picked up two riders along the way that rode with us for a stretch.

I dropped out at around 60ish miles, started cramping on Nautilus. I think I was dehydrated from hanging out at Fiesta Island from 8am to 9:30pm with a bunch of friends. Felt a little behind the curve this morning, killed a bottle on the way over, killed 4 more on the ride, along with 2 bottles of perpetuem and some hammer gel and 6 endurolytes. I like to hold the climbs around 200watts and couldn't do it without cramping. Had to stop and stretch 4 or 5 times off the bike. The descent was a good 49 mph according to the computer. Figured I'd be ok on the flats but coming through mission park I felt a twinge, so I eased up (150 watts), and while I tried rejoining by the entrance to FI, I was trying to get off the bike as both legs just knotted up, so I called the group and told them not to wait and I was heading back. It was bad enough that I had to use the granny on Gilman. :( So, lesson learned, keep better hydrated and if I get behind, don't try to do a century. :) Looking back, I should've skipped the first loop and just met up for the second or the UWP. I was looking forward to comparing power numbers with Adam on the flats around the bay.
Sorry you had to cut your ride short and miss the BBQ. I hope you're feeling better today.

BTW, how was the wedding? You were actually in my dad's neck of the woods. Were you the only round eyes in the room?
Chinese wedding banquets are something else, eh? How much of it was what you would consider eating if it weren't for the wedding banquet?

Well, let's face it - you and your family were quite rude. The homemade burgers, chicken, salads, ice cold beer and great nacho dip made it tolerable :p

It's interesting how a group of men can end up riding harder and faster than most want to. We are such idiots.
In the morning the balance between the Punishers and the Slackers decidedly favored the Punishers. Even Grumpy defected at one point. One minute going along Rancho Santa Fe Rd he is lamenting the pace, then minutes later on PCH he charges out in front at 24mph.
It's a sickness. Fortunately I'm immune.

Not so sure about that - I remember a few pulls where you were on the front pedaling at a pretty good clip :D

Not 24mph good. The only times I pulled were into headwinds, so "good" is sort of relative.

I would have posted up sooner, but every muscle in my body wanted to cramp up when I got home (I have no clue how I made it to work today). This was an awesome day! I've only had my bike for a little over a month and a half and by no means did i think that I would have knocked out a century ride by now. Thanks to Dan for organizing this event, and everyone that allowed me to suck a wheel and be able tyo conserve some energy. I wish I could have stuck around a little longer to enjoy what appeared to be a lovely B-B-Q that you and Tracie had put together. It was nice riding with some faces from last week and some new ones James, Tiffanie, Frank (damn you're a big guy), Gary, Adam, Mark, Ian, and forgive me if I forgot anyone. This was a great learning experience and I absolutely can't wait until the next one.

No, it was harsh and relentless ridicule that did the trick. I'm beginning to think that ripping off this guy's schtick is really gonna pay off -

Dan, thank you to you and Tracie (sp?) for your hospitality, the food was sooooo good and of course the company as well!
and thanks to everyone who stayed back with me. I was thinking I should probably be embarrassed by my performance yesterday but hey, I was amongst friends and if you wanted to make fun of me I figure you'd all just say somethin' about it. :p
Very telling how a few months of excuses can really diminish your fitness level. :o Back on the bike for me, that's for sure! :D

Don't feel distressed. It's just that SoCal BikeForums group rides have been tending toward higher rolling average speeds recently. (I blame blue_nose and Chucklehead for yesterday. :p ) You did a perfectly fine job out there, Tiff.

That's what happens when you get a bunch of posers together for a bike ride. :) It's not a ride, it's a race.

I'll have you know I was one of the gents that hung back at the end and rode with Tiff back to Dan's house :p
Now, the ride up to the ferry terminal, I may have been going a tad fast ;)

Yeah... "Sprint!" :)
Yeah... "Sprint!" :)
I can't. I'm not on a bike, and I can't run worth crap. Besides, being in my apartment, I would run into a wall within a few seconds.
And in any case, my sprint skills suck. I've never legitimately hit 30 MPH on a flat ground no tailwind sprint. I don't train my sprinting skills at all.
