Really thinking of doing it some year. Everyone tells me it's a rolling party. Just don't know how that would go over at home....

whitesox, I rode RAGBRAI back in 1992 with almost no preparation and at a moment's notice. Granted, I was only 19 at the time, so a week's worth of physical activity was nothing to me. I rode all but one day (I drove the our SAG van one day after a fall where I hurt my ankle a bit). It was a great time.
That said, if you ride with any sort of regularity, RAGBRAI is not a big deal if you are into the spirit of the ride. It's seven days of 70-80 miles (usually with one day having an optional century loop). That seems like a lot, but when you have all day to do nothing but ride, enjoy the cycling scene, stop in little towns to take breaks and eat the baked goods the local church ladies are selling to raise money, those miles pass all too fast.
I think there are some companies that will SAG for you and may have registration places available as part of packages. Otherwise, I think you have to put into the lottery for registration slots.
RAGBRAI would be fun to do with a group of friends. People usually come up with creative "team" names and dress accordingly. I'm thinking Team Beef Knicks for this subforum's team with the following credo:
It's a dog eat dog world out there and I'm wearing Milkbone underwear. - Norm Peterson

yeah let's do it!! I will gladly be part of the team and will do my share to cover the cost of what we'd all need to bring. We should think about :D Fun!!!

can you start now bribing the wife?, LOL!! Can't you think of something she really really wants, and present it to her at the most opportune time to relieve you of the RAGBRAI week:D

Once you're registered, there is no cost other than food and drink. You just need your bike, some bike clothes, sunglasses, toiletries, a tent, a sheet and a pillow and you're good to go.
I did it in '03 and am tempted to do it again next year with some local guys. Ragbrai is best done in a group. The whole "the more, the merrier" type thing.

The Clydesdale subforum is allready planning on fielding a team, I'm planning on going one way or another, I might not be 200+lbs next July. But it might be a good idea to think about pooling support vehicles.

You know what would be super cool and totally crazy fun if there was a Team Beef Knicks group on RAGBRAI?
Some sort of Great Lake Bike Forum jerseys!
....Now if someone only had a design for such a jersey..... hmmmm..... good thing there is all winter to get that sorted out, I guess....

It's a play on BFNIC, the unofficial official acronym for Bike Forums Northern Illinois Chapter.

You know I'm glad that this came up here, because I was thinking and talking with some of the people that went with me out to Colorado this past July, about doing this ride next July also....What I was trying to figure out was how to really be sure if you're in the ride or not...Is it true that if you're a member of a Iowa bike club, that you can guarantee entry into the ride when you register??...Or do you just have to send that entry form in as fast as you can when it opens up in Nov??..
My group and I arn't concerned about the physical training aspect of it, but more with the entry process of the whole thing, so any tips on that side of it, would be appreciated here..
Thanks,
Benjamin

I did one day and a half day this year, first time on 'BRAI, I am hooked, what a blast. Re: permits, yes it is much better bet if you belong to a group, but check out the charter links at the RAGBRAI site, that's a great way to go, but sign up early. For example, the Rainbow club in Waterloo had, for like $250, you get the weekly pass, transportation to the start and end points, and they also haul your gear from town to town and even set up a campsite. They also provide solar showers and coolers of beer for like $1/beer. Another option is buying up to 3 day passes which they always have left, in fact they were selling them during the ride. they reserve something like 1500 day passes for each day. What I am thinking is maybe get 3 guys and a camper/RV, each guy buying 3 day passes, and each guy taking say every 3d day off to drive and relax etc.
But it's a great scene, people actually gain weight on the ride what with all the freakin' food and beer
