Hi All-

I'm relatively new to the forum (well, I've been reading a lot lately but new to posting). I'm hoping someone can suggest a good route from the Pasadena area to Newport Beach - I'm planning on riding down Saturday morning to meet my family so I won't be riding back :D I was thinking of heading east along Foothill/Huntington to the San Gabriel River Trail (if that's the correct name) and then following it south along the LA River to Long Beach and then down the coast to Newport. I don't know if that river trail is a good one or how the route along the coast is. I'm up for going further east and then down the 57 Fwy to the Santa Ana River Trail towards Huntington Beach, too.

Really, I'm up for anything and just looking for some good suggestions. I'll be riding solo if that matters. I'd like to make it a pretty decent training ride so I'm hoping to find a route that won't be really congested or full of stoplights, etc. - but beggars can't be choosers. Any suggestions are greatly appreciated! :)

On a separate note I'd just like to add that this forum is really great - I'm a relative noob to cycling but loving every minute of it! I've learned so much from just reading all the posts and replies and, I must admit, drawn some encouragement from all of your stories. I hope to be able to join a group ride at some point soon - I think I'm up for the challenge but have never done it before. For now I just ride La Tuna Canyon or Angeles Crest by myself - it's beautiful but can get boring with nobody to talk to...

Thanks again!

Long Beach to Newport Beach is easy and relatively peaceful.

Others can comment on the northern part of your route.

I would love to try Angeles Crest after I move to Pasadena, but would prefer to do that with at least one other rider, so maybe I'll get in touch with you when the time comes.

I've ridden to Pasadena and back to the Newport Beach Area several times. I suggest you pick any nice west-bound street and go to Rosemead. Head south until you top the Whittier Narrows Dam. Go east along the crest of the dam 'til you reach the San Gabriel River Trail near the east end of the dam. South to Pacific Coast Highway in Seal Beach. South on the road shoulder all the way to Newport Beach. Or take the beach bike path when it starts at the south end of Seal Beach.

Students at Cal Tech take that route. I think they have a bike club. They will know it well.

Ken- That sounds like a good suggestion and if the Cal Tech group takes it then it must be a pretty good route. Thanks for the info.

Urbanknight - let me know when you move to Pasadena. I live very near the base of Angeles Crest in La Canada and would love to do that ride anytime.

The SGRT (san gabriel river trail) goes from Azuza to Seal Beach, so you are a bit further south of Long Beach, but it is a great and easy way to get to the beach...and from there you can ride down to Newport no problem...
I recommend parking at Encanto Park in Duarte, then you ride across a bike bridge to the trail...then head down to the beach...

We do a wed eve ride from Burbank - up la tuna - thru montrose - up and over Chevy Chase and back into
Burbank
You are most welcome to join - PM me for more info
We usually roll at 6:30...tonite since a few others cant make we will roll by 5:45
Its approx 28 miles and 2000 feet of elevation...
