Mountain Biking - what does the avg. MTB weight?

Bikeforums.net is a forum about nothing but bikes. Our community can help you find information about hard-to-find and localized information like bicycle tours, specialties like where in your area to have your recumbent bike serviced, or what are the best bicycle tires and seats for the activities you use your bike for.

tough to say seeing how many differant kinds of bikes there is out there. 26 or 27 is about average for XC bikes.
Mine hits the scales at around 25-25 pounds. It's a XC hardtail with discs, and I run tubeless. Really depends on the type of bike. My trail bike weighs closer to 30.. maybe over 30.. dunno
Wow - there is just too much of a variation to answer that question. There are mountain bikes that tip the scales below 20 pounds, and some that crush the scales @ over 40 pounds. However, as a general reference ... an all-mountain type hardtail generally comes in between 23-28 pounds, and an all-mountain type FS rig usually comes in between 26-32 pounds.

What kind of mtb tips scales @ under 20 lbs? I have never heard of that
Possibly a Ti, single speed could tip scales under 20.. not sure what else..

that's an awfully light mountain bike with virtually nothing on it.

While we are on the subject of weight, i was wondering if anyone knows the weight of a 01/02/03 Specialized Hardrock Comp.
Thx

My marin riftzone (FS) is 26 pounds. but then again my friends titanium hardtail is also 26 pounds. but it seams that most MTB (cross country) are in the 23-29 pound range.

I have been working out lately :D
I have an aluminum singlespeed that's just a tick over 20 pounds, and that's a converted Homegrown with a cassette wheel and chain tensioner on it. My regular mtb weighs in at 21 lbs. Ti mountain bikes tend to be a little heavier than their aluminum bretheren.
Lightest MTB in the world? http://www.mtbreview.com/dream/bikes/7721.html
FWIW, my full-suspension XC bike comes in around 26.5 lbs.
No way dude.. a 15 pound mountain bike? Most ROAD bikes weigh more than that...

Well, there is a blurb on that webpage that indicates it's probably not a very ridable/trailable bike so I'm wondering what the point was other than to hang enough lightweight parts on a lightweight frame to make it passable as a bike.

There is a trade-off between light-weight and strength/durability. Light and expensive is not always strong. For example, the XTR bottom bracket (at least up until the '03 product line) was not as strong as the XT unit. The XT was not as light, but was about 1/2 the price of the XTR unit ....and!! It was tougher.
I'm an XC rider who likes my bike to be light for climbing and nimbleness on the trails at speed. HOwever, I also like to do drops and jumps and stuff. I weigh 170lbs - if was on a 20lb bike it'd crumble under me.... UNacceptable!
My Specialized Stumpjumper FSR-XC, outfitted with mostly XT components and an S-Works wheelset (1450gm/set), weighs in at about 26 lbs. A pretty good weight for a full-suspension (large size) XC bike. The S-Works version of that bike weighed in at about 1 lb lighter. ....and that S-Works frame (for the 2000 model year - same year as my bike) was built of lighter materials and was also known to fail on riders from time-to-time.

I also use a bathroom digital scale. I weigh myself first then weigh myself with the bike (while holding it fully on the scale) and subtract my own weight to get the weight of the bike. I do this because it would otherwise be difficult to balance the bike just by itself on the scale. Other (including many bikeshops) people use commercial hook-scales like those found in meat packing plants.

Whats the point in having a bike that weighs 15 lbs. that you can't ride? Its like someone who just buys it for the bragging rights.
Enh, it's probably RIDEABLE.. but I wouldn't ride it. Fortunately I only weigh 140 pounds so I can get away with thrashing hard on light weight equipment.. but that's just a bit crazy. That's like downhilling on a high end road bike.. rediculous.

Hmm, my XC rig is 29, and my DH is 44, so for me, the average is 36.5! :)

Most shop MTBs are built to cope with over-weight riders who are not that skillful. If they just broke under the typical newbie rider, the legal department would be kept pretty busy. If you are skinny rider with a responsive style, you can shed a whole lot of weight and still have enough strength for the task at hand, esp if you dont ride big drops.
There dont seem to be that many custom MTB frame-builders in the US who could build a rideable bike to lighter specs. In the UK we have a couple of MTB specialist framebuilders who do just that.
In the 1980s, one builder made an expedition MTB, designed to carry rider and luggage. The unladen weight was 23lbs, just as well, since when he wasnt riding the bike, it was strapped to his backpack.

It may depend alot on where your at. Most non Race XC rig around here come in at a little ove 30lbs. My ti bike was 28 out of the shop (or so I'm told) 31 when I picked it up, now maybe 32 or so. The bike I spend most of my time on is 35lbs. Mountain bikes around here are more go any where, do any thing types, then efficent XC rigs. My Ti bike hulls ass though.
Are you talking about a race bike or a trail bike? For a race hardtail I would say that 21-22.5 is acceptable. For a race FS I would say 24-26 pounds. My Superlight w/ 4" travel front and back and disc brakes weighs 25.2 pounds. I would like to take another pound off of it though.
Check out www.light-bikes.com for some truly light bikes. There are some sub 20 pound hardtails on there.
