Our Santana tandem we ordered with 10 inch disk on the rear is due in next week and someone mentioned not all racks will clear the disk (we are talking about a tandem mounted gear rack and not a rack for transport on a car). For those of you with the 10 inch disk back there, what racks have you found that work and which ones do not clear?

Thanks in advance.

Our disk isn't a 10 incher, but the Axiom Journey (http://www.amazon.com/Axiom-Journey-Disc-Rear-Black/dp/B000C15KA2) rack fits and works well. I wouldn't classify it as appropriate for heavy duty touring, but is a great value, well built, easy to install, and more than adequate for the trunk bag we use with it.

Another option I've seen used is a normal rack with the legs spread slightly, using long bolts and spacers to get the leg to clear the disk. Again, this was on a smaller disk, and the arrangement made the rack slope to the rear slightly.

There are other threads out there with this same question. Search the forums for "disk brake rack" and you'll find additional information....Here is one thread.

We use a red rock from Old Man Mountain. It is very sturdy, quite wide, and I think it would clear a 10" disk with no problem. I told the guys at Old Man Mountain it was for a Santana tandem (160mm rear spacing) and they spread the rack and included appropriate attaching hardware.

Bought our rack from Santana with the bike but I do not see a problem with rear racks.

Thanks for the photos, Our Comotion has the brake mounted to the rear of the seat stays, interfering with the rack, whereas yours is mounted in front of the seat stays. We use a Topeak rack that clamps to the stoker seat post and that works ok for us.

Topeak makes a disc brake specific rack which accomodates a number of their really nice quick slide-on/off trunk bags. You can purchase this rack (and bags, for that matter) at R.E.I. If you don't like it, or it won't fit, you can return it--no questions asked. I really like mine.

I've got a Santana with a 10" rear disc. I've got an OLD Blackburn Expedition Rack on it (from back when they came in sizes). I had to bend the upper arms to get them to line up with the seatstay mounting points but the bottom was a straight bolt up.

I'm thinking the 160mm dropouts made rack mounting a non-issue.

Here's how I worked out a rack on our tandem.

I had plans to do the spacer thing, but I found a JandD rack that was so close to fitting that I decided to modify the rack instead. Here's some pictures of how I did it on our Cannondale tandem (don't laugh at the stumpy stoker position):

The ends of the rack were bent inward and foward slightly and repainted. It came out really nicely and is a lot more structurally sound than big spacers cantilevering the forces outward.

I figured by now, that the rack manufacturers would have disc brake frendly racks.

Sheldon,
A nicely layed out website. It says it was made with JAlbum and Chameleon. Was it pretty much out of the box or did you need to do some customizations? I like the photo interactivity especially.
