Since there was enough interest, here's the official thread.
This is a 57.77 mile route with mostly rollers, and just two sustained climbs. The plan is to start at the Westfield North County Fair in Escondido off of I-15 and Via Rancho Parkway. Park behind the Macaroni Grill. The route is a very scenic one, beginning West on Via Rancho, then North and West through Harmony Grove, Elfin Forest, and San Elijo, then going West on La Costa by Batiquitos Lagoon to the Ocean. Down the 101 to the top of Torrey Pines, then turn around. North on the 101 to Lomas Santa Fe, then East through Rancho Santa Fe, climb Del Dios, then back to the start.
Here's the Route (http://www.toporoute.com/cgi-bin/getSavedRoute.cgi?routeKey=HBYRSMIONDGHIYA)
I would like to meet at 7:00 am, with plans to roll at 7:30. I'm anticipating to be done riding no later than noon, and we could have lunch at Mac Grill, On the Border, Red Robin...or go into the mall for some Orange Julius, or sit at the Brookstone massage chairs for an hour. :D

I was thinking more along the lines of John Bobbitt. He leveraged his little incident into a successful movie career. I know a good agent if you're interested.

I do not think that means what they think that means. However, if my precious tallywhacker was nefariously ginsu'ed and knuckleballed unceremoniously upon a neighbors tall fescue, I'm pretty certain y'all would have known about it without my having to make an announcement.

I have been granted a hall pass for the ride and am looking forward to meeting the group.
As to the potential sandbagger status...not likely...my last Temecula-Scripps Ranch ride (solo) was 66 miles at 15.1mph...

I do a similar ride to this one but I start down from Hillcrest and go up this way only in the reverse direction. I would meet up with you all but I don't think I will make it to Escondido that early. Takes over an hour to get up there.
Patrick,
As soon as you have the base miles down we can do a nice long ride up Paly for lunch. I start at Solana Beach and can meet up in your neighborhood on the way up. Have you been riding the moto lately?

OP edited for updated crew. Patrick and SprSonik (if that is your real name), I'm looking forward to meeting you both.
What's the status of I-15 on a bike just south of the start? If one goes on Pomerado Rd by bike, does it still feed onto I-15 north and get one to the start? I'm considering the possibility of riding to the start, but it seems a bit too far given the start time to go along a coastal route.

There's a new (as of Aug. 1) bike detour over Lake Hodges, between Pomerado and Via Rancho...I don't know how it works, though.
There used to be a 'chute' made with concrete barriers and the bridge wall on the East side of the Northbound I-15, but that's been removed due to construction.
On my way home today, I can take a good look at how one gets across now.

Last time I saw it, bikes were going south on the very right of the freeway. Did not see the north lane because of the construction.

No I haven't been on the moto lately at all. I need to throw some new rubber on but I've been having too much fun on the pedal bike to actually find the time to do it. I want to climb paly, but not on the weekend with all the squids up there as of late!

i am most likely out for this one.
I'm riding with some other friends north out of UC early Sunday morning. We will be looping up through RSF and back out to the coast, so may see you on the road.
Any updates as to the bike detour to get over Lake Hodges? I'm also trying to figure out if I can get there along a coastal route in time for the start. It looks a bit iffy, though.
Also, anyone willing to bring some water (tap water would do just fine) to the start for me to refill my bottles? Thanks in advance to anyone willing.

The Northbound I-15 route doesn't have the barriers any more. You get on at Pomerado, then hug the 10' wide shoulder over the Lake Hodges bridge, and exit before the offramp onto a bike path that comes out by a self storage and a Shell and Chevron station. The Mall is just across the street.
There was quite a bit of debris on the shoulder, and unless you're comfortable with about 1/2 mile of freeway riding, I'd probably skip it until construction is done.
According to signage that's posted, there's to be a new pedestrian and bike bridge to be built adjacent to the freeway...pretty sure that won't be done by Sunday. ;)
You could always do the 2nd half of our route, come up the 101 to Lomas Santa Fe, through RSF to Del Dios and Via Rancho Parkway. But to make the start time of 7:30, you'd probably have to leave no later than 5:30 from La Jolla.
I have no problem bringing water for you. I was planning on bringing a gallon or so for after the ride anyway.

Cool Dan! Should be a gorgeous day.
Thanks Mo for the update and the water.
By the way, just to clarify, I'm definitely in. Just picking a route to the start still. Either I'll do the return route for this ride (but that's a bit long for getting there by 7:30) or I'll do the route the 200k brevet in January took. I think the route the brevet took is a bit shorter and should allow me to get there in time.

I'll bring some extra, but you have to carry my water on the climbs. :) I'll figure out if I'm in tomorrow, wife has a "short" list of stuff that needs done around the house, and I'm riding tomorrow also.
Nice try. Mo already promised me water. :p
Argh... mapping out the routes to the start, it's ilke 20 miles along Pomerado, which is easily doable. It's like 27 miles along the other routes. I'm going to have to ride awfully hard to make it to the start on time.

Man, I didn't think about that way. That'd be the easiest route. Pomerado isn't that bad of a climb. Leave by 6am at the latest.
So you're carrying Mo's water, that's good, we need something to slow the skinny guy down. I just got done putting the PT wheel on the Aero, man that thing is heavy with the wheel cover. 1730 grams without a cassette. The 32 spoke I took off weighs 970 without cassette. Well, time to sleep, have to be riding by 7:30.
The stretch over I-15 is looking a bit sketchy, so I'm planning on riding in from the west, along the route for the 200k brevet. Those extra 7 miles make the difference between a leisurely cruise and TT'ing it to the start.

Jason is going to shame me into riding to the start. I live right off Pomerado, 12 miles from the start.
You sure you want to ride to the start? Here's what you have to look forward to (and why I'm going to TT it along a much longer alternate route)...

Isn't the I-15 part of the 50 miles July 4th Scripps Old Pro bike ride? If so, it felt ok.
Just be careful of a silver Acura during that time. I have bad driving skills and if I'm running late for this ride...

Jason: I've ridden on the I-15 over that bridge with no barriers. Sure it's a little nerve wracking, but no more than (for example) climbing Lake Wohlford with its NO shoulder. There's plenty of room, and if you have faith in humanity, nobody will be veering over into you.
As I offered in my PM, I could (very easily) meet you on Pomerado near the freeway and ferry you across.
Since I have no shame and am driving your water to the start point (in lieu of riding the 8 miles to the start), I'll have my car, rack, etc.
Let me know.

OTOH, if you don't have faith, they will veer into you. Consider it a test.
Okay, Pomerado it is. That makes life a lot easier. (20 miles, not much climbing, 1:50 from civil twilight to ride start? Piece of cake.) I thought debris filled shoulder meant so much debris that taking a lane would be necessary.

Mark/efficiency. Let me know if you want a tire or two. I have 4 new ones from PBK when they were on sale. Since I don't need them now, you can just wait until they go on sale again and return them to me. :)
They are Vittoria Rubino Pros. 3x red, 1x blue. I like them more than the Mich Krylon that I have on another wheel, but I guess it's more of a personal thing. Felt like the Vittoria's are more direct/good road feel while the Mich's are quite squishy/remote. It may just be a mental thing since I don't ride that much.

I'm looking to join part of this ride (need to head home after the Torrey - live near UTC) so to get the mileage in is there anyway I can meet you guys along the way?
Option 1) - There's a 7-Eleven on West Valley Pkwy just past the Home Depot I think...
Option 2) - The Starbucks on the east corner of La Costa + El Camino Real
Option 2 is probably easier logistically...
Thanks,
Ian in SD
