I am just visiting from NC, will be here a few more weeks. I simply can't believe that Eugene or rather Lane County has the money to chipseal every county road at the same time. I have never been anywhere where there is so much oil and little pieces of rocks all over the shoulder like there is here.

Just a small rant!

It's an environmental condition. The days when weather is conducive to chip sealing, low humidity and high temperature, occur in the mid summer. Most public works agencies will have chip seal crews going 12 hours a day, 7 days a week when the weather allows.

Come back from October through May and you will not encounter any fresh oil and gravel.

Lane County is less densely populated than Multnomah County. A chip seal road is cheaper than a road made of asphaltic concrete. It is also less durable and better suited to areas where traffic volume is lighter.

They're also using it in downtown Portland a lot right now on account of all the construction. I will not miss picking sticky pieces of road off my tires every night when it's all finally over. :rolleyes:

Shifty I am always looking for people to ride with. Did NF19 today from the dam up to Box Canyon, then followed that up with the 11 miles of Hwy 242 up to the snow gate. Today's totals:

66.8 miles
4:42 time
5698 ft total ascent

Not much of a climber as you can see from my times. At least the roads were good, with very little debris.

Main roads in Yakima are also being chip-sealed. One road--Powerhouse Road--even had a chip-sealed bike lane added to it, which effectively is now a debris lane full of gravel and detritus. How to counter this chip-seal craze? I know it's all cost related; chip-sealed roads are cheaper than those redone with hot asphalt. I have attended local meetings of the bicycle and pedestrian advisory committee. The response from the local planners and builders is basically a shrug. Cyclists are not as important as cars and cars can drive on chip-sealed roads just fine. How to counter that perception?

Portland successfully fought a Parks and Rec proposal to pave one of the local MUPs (the Springwater) with chip seal instead of real asphalt

Laxsurfer, already done some rides in and around the area and found a few roads that aren't re-sealed or aren't too bad.

Territorial Rd south out of Lorraine
Smith River Rd
Elk Creek Rd from Smith River to Siuslaw River Rd
Aufderheide Dr from the dam to Box Canyon
Camp Creek Rd, including Upper Camp Creek
Marcola Rd and Wendling Rd
Hwy 242 up to the snow gate (its still closed at the snow gate)
Prairie Rd between Santa Clara and Junction City

Still looking for more places to ride, will probably go out and do the Brownsville loop if I can get out early one morning. I am also thinking about doing the old Willamette Flyway loop up to Corvallis through Monroe and back down Peoria Rd just to get a century in before I head back to NC.
