Foo - New Duathalon

Bikeforums.net is a forum about nothing but bikes. Our community can help you find information about hard-to-find and localized information like bicycle tours, specialties like where in your area to have your recumbent bike serviced, or what are the best bicycle tires and seats for the activities you use your bike for.

Spent the last few days unwinding down in Amish country and found a new sport...a type of duathalon, that I think would be cool: x miles canoing and x miles cycling. I think I like doing the canoe first - maybe 10-20 miles, followed by maybe a metric century on the bike. Discuss among yourselves. I'm going back out to do it again. :)

I love canoeing and go as often as I can into North Georgia and Tennessee.
It may be more appropo to combine canoeing with moutain biking.
Great concept, though.

Combine into one sport with a bicycle powered canoe.
Now I'd like to do that!!!!! Luv canoe/kayak!
Have done a few duathlon relays (not the runner) where I took the bike portion - but that sounds like fun!

The spring Tsali triathlon here in WNC is a paddle, mtb and run race.

A guy here at work was thinking about doing a tri that was kayak, ride, run.

Like organized? Kewl, I just did it on my own and thought...this would be a peachy keen sport! Thing that's nice about the canoing is that you can't get lost...unlike my bike ride where I took a wrong turn and ended up doing about 10 extra miles and about 1k more climbing (on some darned 15-20% grades!) before I found my way back to where I made my mistake. Oh well, the legs needed some work I guess...nothing a good soak in the hot tub last night couldn't cure. :)

Learn to run? No thanks, I gave up running a long time ago. After doing 20 mile jaunts in boots, 50lb pack and rifle, running half neekid just don't seem like fun anymore. ;)
I'd like to find a non-running tri-type sport. I think the perfect tri is what I did yesterday - canoe, bike, hot tub. :D
I did this race as an individual a couple of times in the 80's. There used to be a few of this type in New England in years past. Not sure what's out there these days.

So it sounds like the perfect occasion for that little black number you've been saving in your closet :D
Seriously, it does sound like a great duathlon- like RDad, I've seen the kayak tris- ocean kayaking, actually. Not for the timid.

Every fall my town sponsors a kayak-bike-run call Pedal, Paddle, Run. It's a bit on the short side and tends to draw more of a family type participation rather than hardcore triathletes, but it always ends up being a lot of fun for everyone involved.

The date says June, but that was a reschedule of last year's rainout. It's normally held in October.

10-20 miles of kayaking plus a metric century? This duathlon sounds like it'd take me at least two days.

Geez, and here I thought "duathlon" was just a fancy new name for a boilermaker.
And it wasn't the toothless guy who "got" Ned Beatty. It was the guy with the full head of hair who looked a little like Cliff Robertson.

I think the 10 to 20 miles of kayaking was downstream... ;)

What? no pic from the commuting forum showing the bike in the canoe, then the bike hauling the canoe? I figured this was what Chipcom was talking about.
