This past winter was my second winter with studded tyres, and due to excessive stud wear on my first pair (the first winter) I got a pair of Nokian 294s 2.1" monsters for the second winter. Wonderful tyres and they saved me from crashing at least once. However, in deep snow, they're almost useless, as they simply don't dig down through the snow, but instead float up on top, and then fall through, and force me to stop because the speed drops to a crawl.

At the same time, every skinny-tyred commuter around me simply plowed through the snow almost effortlessly.

So, my question is, are there any narrow studded tyres available for 26" (559 mm) rims? And by narrow, I mean something like 35 mm wide at the most.

Preferably with tungsten carbide studs for better wear, but steel is acceptable if that's all there is.

There are plenty of narrow studded tyres available for 622 rims, but that doesn't work for me, of course...

The Hakkapeliitta W106 seems to be available in 559mm, but it's only slightly narrower than what you have now. See http://www.suomityres.fi/w106.html for details.

For what it's worth, I have the 35-622 version, and I can guarantee I still don't "simply plow through the snow almost effortlessly". But it works fairly well. :D

I think the problem is that your tires have way too many studs on them. 294 studs are for serious winter off road conditions. I use the Nokian 106 700x35 as Juha does, and as he has found you don't just glide through the snow, but you aren't pushing massive amounts of metal on your tires either. I'm quite happy with them.

Also check out Continental, they have some new winter tires, although I don't know anything about them. Schawlbe makes a studded tire too.

Yeah, going from 2.1 to 1.9 is meaningless.

I actually wish I could get studded slicks. A Conti SportContact 1.3" with tungsten carbide studs would be awesome! :D

Schwalbes on discount here (http://www.biketiresdirect.com/productdetail.asp?p=SCSNO&buttonAction=ci_SCSNO)but still 1.9" (also marked up $10 before marked down $25 relative to Schwalbe's own site, so discount not quite as steep as BTD makes it look).

Unfortunately, going from 2.1 to 1.9 simply doesn't make enough of a difference to make it worth the effort, but thanks anyway!
