I have a Mini and just ordered a new one. The first Mini's tires are looking a little thin. So I want to buy some new ones. We mostly ride on paved with quite a few gravel and hard packed dirt thrown in: about 30% of the time.

So what would you get: Schwalbe's Big Apple, Marathon Plus or Mad Mike? Or Maxxis Hookworm?

Hookworm is cheaper than the Big Apple. Regardless, I would go with the Big Apple ... fat tire with a wide range of acceptable tire pressures and low rolling resistance (reported).

I like my Big Apples, but I haven't tried the others, so I am not an authoritative source.

BTW, how many miles did the original tires last you?

I recently replaced the stock Kendas for Schwalbe Marathons (40-305) with Kevlar. They roll a lot better and weigh less than the Kendas (even less than the Big Apples), and the ride is plenty comfy.

FYI, I called Schwalbe and was told this model was discontinued (though they do still have some in stock), and the Marathon Plus was never made in this size.

So I swapped the stock Kendas for the Big Apples. I think that it is a huge difference. Much better rolling properties and cornering grip.

On a side note, I discovered that a local dealer is also a Schwalbe dealer. I managed to pick up the tires with a phone call and a 30 minute ride on the mini.

I love the Big Apples on my Mini! Great combination.

Rear: Primo Comet.

Both tires fit the rims very nicely; both take high pressure; both have kevlar belts and a reflective strip.

The fun of it, though, is that the difference in tire size results in the front wheel having about 18mm larger diameter than the rear wheel. This effectively changes the geometry of the bike, relaxing the angles by about one degree.

The result: it's very comfortable, and now I can ride no hands!

Very interesting RHM. Right now I use the Big Apples ... but with the rear suspension, I keep the rear tire close to max pressure.
