He rode strongly in a post Tour crit. I think the boy finally hit bottom and this time he is going to make a respectable comeback. I wish him well. He had such monster potential that they actually compared him to Merckx when he was coming up.

He was actually quoted on Monday night after the race, that he still has the potential to win the Tour. Not sure about that, but he could easily come back and do well at the classics and one-weekers.

+1. his ride to win the Corestates in 1989 was a superb effort.

Beat the likes of Knickman, Kiefel. A mate of mine was in the winning break with him but was shelled in the final. Reckons GO was an absolute monster.....could slam the 53x14 for hours, impervious to the effort.

the towns/business owners pay the organiser to be in the race program/sponsor a rider/sponsor a support event/sponsor bloody everything really, the organiser then pays the riders and the riders put on a "race" for those who couldn't get to France and see the Tour. Crowds are huge = cash.

These criteriums are highly anticipated every year....the fans are 6 deep on the finish line. All eating, drinking, partying and generally spending cash at local establishments. Often a carnival is set up at the same time within the circuit.

Only the Draai van der Kraai used to charge an entry fee....but more might do so now.

The program for the evening lists dozens of local sponsors, this is where the $$$ comes from to pay the likes of Di Luca, Contador, Boogerd etc. to turn up.
