Advocacy & Safety - Anti-cyclist Thread

Bikeforums.net is a forum about nothing but bikes. Our community can help you find information about hard-to-find and localized information like bicycle tours, specialties like where in your area to have your recumbent bike serviced, or what are the best bicycle tires and seats for the activities you use your bike for.

I live in a town that has a dedicated bike trail that runs parallel to the main roads for about 20 miles and there are still jack asses that ride on the road. I think it should be illegal.
He must be from Portland.

I'm not familar with any "dedicated bike trail" in the Portland area. They're all MUPs.

I was going to post, but they are all just stereotyping rednecks (and I'm a hypocrite).

With alot of drivers it all comes down to running stop lights and signs> I really wish most bikers could just stop at stop signs and lights.
The guy has every right to think the way he does, especially about the type of cyclists he is talking about. All the law-breaking dangerous-to-themselves-and-others cyclists should stay off the road. Mentally ill people are not allowed to own firearms for the same reason. ;)

Now, if we could only tie in abortion and same sex marriage somehow, we would have the triumvirate working in this thread.
Don't forget to add in the current P&R Topic de joure...Religion vs Atheism!
rednecks on bikes lol, this belongs in foo

Naw, let the gays marry. Then they'd find out why the rest of us are so damned miserable! :D

I really wish most DRIVERS would just stop at stop signs and not run red lights- drivers are atrocious in Seattle... .a lot, a LOT of fast rolling thru stop signs. saw a bus run a blatant red light today.
i thought for a while maybe they were picking it up from bicyclists, but realized that no, drivers just suck at following the rules of the road.
I thought this was going to be a lot worse than it was, given the fact that it was a gun forum. Though most of the posters were anti-biking rednecks, I was pleasantly surprised to see that a large minority of the gun crowd thought that bicylists actually do have a right to the road, and that their defense of bicycling was even sort of vigorous, esp. that guy from Maine. And even most of the anti-biking posts weren't homicidal; they were just pissed off because they didn't seem to realize that a sidewalk isn't a bike path. Compared to some other stuff I've seen, these guys were actually kind of civilized. Maybe we've turned a corner...

^^^No surprise there gun owners are intelligent, and civilized. The day all the gun owners decide NOT to be civilized, you'll know it very fast.

This is some funny shyt!
Look at this moron:
Okay, so Im immature and get as close to them as I can until the exhaust is right next to them, then I lay into the Duramax and smoke'em.
And then check out his profile:
This is the year 2007. We are counting the very years since Jesus was here, He said He is coming back. Ask Him to come into your life and forgive you of all you have done wrong, then go on and live for Him as He teaches in the new testament.
Just another inbred bible-thumper who wouldn't know the teachings of Jesus, if they smited him in the ass.
praise the lord and run down the cyclists!

Actually the OP was getting slammed quite a bit by his fellow red neck forum members. It was pretty funny really. But like you, I thought it was going to be a lot worse, given the kind of forum it was.
I was particularly humored by some of those bike statistics they were talking about, like where that one guy said he averages 45 mph everywhere he goes, and the other guy bragging about his super expensive $1000 bike. I mean, their hearts were in the right place (defending cyclists) but c'mon!! :D
LOL at Mr. 45mph. He made funnies!
Actually a $1000 bike is super expensive. It's probably more expensive than 98% of all bikes sold worldwide. I've been cycling since '72 and last year I spent more than $1000 on a bike for the first time.
I couldn't bring up the gun forum thread so didn't read the post but is it possible that Mr. 45 is from Canada and was bragging about averaging 45 kph? That's realistic - and impressive.

For those who don't want to read the whole thread (don't waste your time) I'll summarize.
I am bigger, more powerful, faster, louder, I possess more torque and horsepower, I am a lot heavier [and alot more useful and utilitarian] and I like pickup trucks more that Shimano or whatever bicycles.
The liberal pinkos can say all they want, the important thing is that WE have the guns.
Not just anti-bike.
Pedestrians don't give me lots of problems around here, with the possible exception of those who came from our "friendly country to the South" -- they wander along in the street when there's a perfectly good sidewalk right there. I'm guessing that where they come from, their house has a dirt floor, dirt outside the front door, dirt front "yard" (watch those chickens!), and a dirt road. So it all blends together into one big wandering pathway.
And racist.
There are instances where a cyclist can push a "cross" button right at the side of the intersection just like for pedestrians. The light changes and an AVERAGE of 8 vehicles have to decelerate, stop, and idle, while a lone cyclist crosses the road. The vehicles then accelerate again.
All you "GO GREEN" freaks should explain how THAT is ecologically friendly.
But seriously, the "go green" stuff, I just don't care about the environment, at least not enough to endanger my own life, or slow others down.
And anti-environmentalist.
Oh yeah I never get in people's way, either.
But the OP does no wrong.
I'll take the black top, you can have the stones off to the side.
I say bicyclist stay in your town and not in mine !!
Separate but equal.
And please don't try to lecture me on endurance, I am on the Cross Country team at my school and I know endurance and wind.
I'm guessing this is a high school kid? With GUNS?
Your all missing the point, this is all about me, me, me.
Finally, the truth comes out.

I love this one. I guess he wants us to run red lights.

He quite clearly used mph, but was willing to concede after being called on it, that he "couldn't keep up that pace all day."
He kindly summarizes his point thusly: "on the open road, I CAN keep up with a car going 45 or 50 mph, I just wear out after 5 or 10 miles of doing it."
I see three possibilities:
1) he has his computer set to kph and is pulling off a truly spectacular feat of self-delusion.
2) he lives near a Cinzano distribution center.
3) he has his exaggeration factor set to x2 instead of the more customary +2.

4. He has a huge hill that he rides down. He just doesn't tell us that it is 3 mph coming back up :D

The usual nonsense we hear and read every season. This typically comes up in the April / May time frame, the start of the season for most.
One entry did stand out in my mind though:
There's a local radio jock who's a big bike rider, and I have a standing bet with him: The first time I see a bicycle rider actually OBEY a traffic law, I'll send a check for $50 to his favorite charity. Thus far my money is safe.
Sir, come up to the Boston area and observe me some time. Then get your checkbook out. If you agree to toss in an extra 25 bucks, I'll recite the key parts of the MA bicycle statutes to you. (You'll find it in the general laws, chapter 85, section 11B. ) As they say in TV land, "deal, or no deal"?
I wish people would worry about what they do, not what others do.
Its not that easy. Remember forums can be seen by 1000s a day easily. So if theres no counter point in these moronic threads then we have no voice and only the bozos get heard. Personally id love to catch some of these morons in a parking lot some where.

"Buford," a founding member of "Shooting Forums," was the second poster in the anti-cyclist thread. He simply said,
"Bicyclists have the same right to the road as you do. Your not allowed to ride on the sidewalk anyway."
End of story. Educated folk know the real deal (though riding on the SW is not something you'll get a ticket for.)
People wanting to protect their right to own firearms should be smarter than to start advocating restricting other people's freedoms.

+1000!
I thought this quote from a member was hilarious:
"So we had a superintendent driving a well marked company truck who got angry at a group of bicyclists. He blew the horn. He sped by and gave them the finger.
Unfortunately for him, one of our VPs was in the group of riders. "

I only know one person who hates bicycles on the road, she hates guns too. And she is racist too.
