View Full Version : Oahu Cyclists - New Bike Store To Open!

A new bike store is being built up on Waialae Avenue - between Boston Pizza and 7-11 (10th and 11th Avenues). It used to be a stained glass shop that went out of business. Yesterday, they had paper over the main windows but in the upper windows was handing some high end road bike frames (Look and Time) and a pair of Mavic wheels. I just passed there now and some guys were assembling the displays. I'm guessing at least another 2 weeks or so until it opens.

I'm pretty happy because I work only 1 block away. I hope they are wildly successful.

It would be nice to have a shop [other than the inconveniently located Eki] that recognized that not everybody who rides in Honolulu is an elite roadie, an elite roadie wannabe, or a mountain biker. But judging from what you saw in the window, we're in for more of same. Anyway a good location, since it seems like there more roadies riding on Waialae than on other thoroughfares. Strategically located near espresso supplies too.

'Sorry for the semi-jack, but do people really ride on Waialae to get between, well UH and Kahala? I'm comfortable riding in traffic, but getting squeezed is not my idea of a good time, and is what has limited my riding to Round Top/Tantalus (which I enjoy immensely, but, some flat stuff every now and then is a nice break, sometimes).

Being a roadie elitist wannabe I look forward to visiting this new shop the next time I'm back in HNL!

Hey t4mv,
Actually, I see a lot of cyclists on Waialae. It's dangerous in certain sections - anything east of Kokohead Avenue is pretty scary if you're traveling in the eastbound direction. If I need to get to Kahala going east, I'll go around Diamond Head. Much longer but a lot safer.

If I'm coming back from Kahala going in the westbound direction, I will ride on the sidewalk from Zippy's Kahala to Keanu St (residential area away from Waialae). People coming off the freeway go much too fast and the streets are too narrow to stay on Waialae Ave. I reconnect with Waialae at Wilhemina Rise. By then, I'm almost at the top of the hill, so I cruise down Waialae at 25-35 mph which is enough to keep up with most traffic.

I'll post an update of the new store when they're open. I am an admitted elitist roadie wannabe. I am constantly engaged in the pursuit of buying better equipment that I mistakenly believe will compensate for my lack of true abilities.:)

The name of the store is Momentum Multisport. They carry Kuota, Time, Look and Colnago. They will be open tomorrow. Looks nice!

Yeah, according to the advertising postcard that came in the mail today the grand opening festivities tomorrow will include, among other things, free massages, a hypnosis demonstration, and a sports fashion show! Sprocket Man, can we get a site visit report?

Hey, just to hijack a little while the 808 peeps are on a thread, does anyone here know of any LBSs on Oahu or Maui that sell cool local team jerseys? I'm visiting (but applying to UH) and want to pick up something as a souvenir (and I need some jerseys anyway).

Thanks!

In Honolulu, check out Island Triathlon and Bike on Kapahulu Ave and the Bike Shop on South King Street near Piikoi.

You can also get jerseys from the Hawaii Bicycling League (www.hbl.org).

And if you do end up at UH you can join the triathlon club (team?) which also has a jersey...

I took a quick look inside of the store today. The store layout is nice and their inventory is mostly high-end stuff. If I hadn't already exceeded my annual budget for bike purchases, I would definitely have spent more time in there. I noticed 3 of the employees at the store used to work at Island Triathlon and Bike. I wonder if Frank (owner of IT&B) is involved in this start-up or did his employees just defect?

Which 3?I don't know their names. One of them is a bald guy (he's cool - he sold me my Felt). Another guy is the mechanic with glasses. The third guy is an Asian dude - thin and kind of short (about 5'5" or so).

Not likely that Frank is involved. Last time I was in ITB, about a year ago, he tried to sell me the business. I had looked at buying his Wahiawa outlet in 1995, but it was clear it would go under. Keith might be the mechanic, cool guy.

I went inside the store for the first time today. Surprisingly, most of their inventory is not high-end road bikes. They have a good assortment of mountainbikes and singlespeed/fixed gear stuff too. I picked up some tires and will probably return to have them replace my headset on my fixie.

Talked to Frank a couple of days ago, he said that two of his mechanics (Keith & Tom?) are in the new shop. I'll be sticking w/ ITB, they've always done right by me and my wife, and on a visit to the new place (before I talked to Frank) I didn't see anything that floated my boat anyway.

It's been several months since Momentum Multisport has opened and I must say that I'm not very impressed with their level of service. I'm going to stick with IT&B, McCully Bike or The Bike Shop from now on.

 I know what guy he's talking about because he's always there and he never wears a shirt. It's a shame that Mr. Shirtless Guy is so clueless that he can't seem to fathom that it's inappropriate to be working in any kind of retail setting without a shirt.

finally stopped by the store, shirtless guy wasn't there but the staff is pretty friendly, looks like it's more oriented towards the triathlon crowd.

You don't find that in every store around here (Bikefactory comes to mind). However, I took my bike to be serviced there and they weren't very good about follow up. The guys at McCully bike service department are much better.

The owner gave us a fantastic deal on Look 555 and Scott tri bike for JB.

Unbelievable service and support.

I hope they do well, they deserve it.

They have the A team working there, for sure.

"shirtless guy" lol...kurt? hey, I've seen worse shirtless. it's Hawaii, who cares? Punahou does not even require shoes and it is a top academic school....feeds into the Ivies.
(he freedives to 180 ft, incredible fwiw) Inappropriate covers a lot of what goes on here in Hawaii.

seriously, the owner treated us very well. The Garmin tech drove a sensor over to them on a unit we had bought on-line. My test ride was in busy rush hour traffic and the owner gave me some great traffic/navigation support. Then he even found us the rack we needed at another shop, The Bike Shop(I think) I don't know, I haven't had better service too many places and probably NONE in Hawaii in my eight years here.

I felt they were a very soft sell, not pushy at all and met their needs by meeting ours. We had just come back from shopping in SoCal and I am comparing them to some of the world class shops in SD, LA, ...from a new cyclist's perspective. JB has other needs, he has done some Tris, etc.

My problem with IT&B (I like them) is that I never got the guidance in long enough focused intervals for me to move forward to the next level and buy a bike. Win helped me to know what questions to answer for myself and I observed he did this well for JB also, in a low key organized way.... We felt good about giving him our dollars.

Yeah, most people are going to be busy these next 3 weeks or so because of the holidays. I'm going to start another thread asking people if they want to take a ride on January 13.

my kid is a senior

Iolani? yea, okay, too academic for my haoles, I decided. Those Iolani kids study till midnight. Punahou, however was named the number four sports school in the nation by Sport's Illustrated.

Just sayin...

no shirt, okay by me. If you think No Shirt Kurt is tasteless, have you seen Rich's knee high bike socks with shorts? Now, that offended me. He said he is going for the Japanese schoolgirl look.

So...anybody who speaks Vietnamese, how do you pronounce the owner's name? We say Win.

Kaleaneole is scary, especially the Hawaii Loa intersection, yellow light lasts about 4 seconds. Who the heck is that *old* guy who can mash all the way up our hill? 20% in places, he is unbelievable, I want his autograph.
