Bicycle Mechanics - Too small handlebars for stem + stripped screw

Bikeforums.net is a forum about nothing but bikes. Our community can help you find information about hard-to-find and localized information like bicycle tours, specialties like where in your area to have your recumbent bike serviced, or what are the best bicycle tires and seats for the activities you use your bike for.
I bought a syncro stem today and its mouth is too wide for my saeko handlebarsI stuffed some strips of coke cans in there on the suggestion of a bike mechanic but it can't get tight enough due to a stripped allen-screw. It can tighten and untighten just not enough.
any ideas other than taking it back? I really like it.

This is a critical component on the bike and should be TIGHT! Take it back, though with a stripped thread it is a bit ballsy to return it. Steve
the place is totally cool about it. I got a different stem, one with brass shims. Turns out my bars are 25.0, crazy trek 1400
A bike shop worthy of continued support. Steve
