Do those hook-wrenches come in a different size for italian bottom brackets? mine was a ***** to put in, and seems to be equally *****y coming out, and it seems like the wrench (especially the 3 hook part) is not super tight, and i really don't want to strip the BB and get stuck with an almost seized BB for the rest of my bikes life.

Bonus questions:
1. Since my BB is italian threaded, is it possible to install it backwards for a different chainline?

2. If i put a 118.5 bb in backwards, will it give me the same chainline as a 109.5? i don't really know how to do the math on this, but i've compared them and it looks like it's pretty much the same.

3. Why the hell is my facking Dura-Ace bottom bracket allready almost seized? not only is it the highest-zoot part of my bike, which otherwise works perfect, but i've ridden on it for -maybe- a month now.

With many cartridge and all loose bearing BB axles I am
familiar with you can reverse the axle or cartridge inside
the cups/retainer rings, something done inadvertently
with 106 to 109 range axles because there is very little
visual difference between the CW and L sides. If you
don't mind the L side crank being spaced 'way out'
and it improves the R side chain line go ahead. Since it
only takes 5-10min to reverse it just try it out for size.

What do you mean by seized? BB bearings or cups in the
BB shell?

it's an octalink...
and by seized (well, almost) i mean the bb bearings. i know that i should be able to pull them out and re-pack them with grease and be good to go, but it just so happens that i have an ultegra BB that is 118.5. while it's not as bling as the DA bottom bracket that is in there now, it is a more sealed mechanism and should be generally less stress.

If you have a BB-7703 it cannot be serviced, the BB-7700 can be serviced.

Using a spanner on that BB is a PITA!

If you have a BB-7703 it cannot be serviced, the BB-7700 can be serviced.


It can also be mis-adjusted. Could well be the case here.

You never know - I couldn't come up with a BB tool for my Italian BB which was an oem Bianchi (no idea who actually made it) titanium spinal BB to match the cf crank. I finally emailed Bianchi usa and sent them a picture of the danged thing and they wrote back and told me the tool is NOT available in the US. If it needs to be serviced, I should bring it to my Bianchi dealer and they can call Bianchi usa who will then overnight the tool to them on loan. I though that was pretty weird. Hope I don't need to remove it anytime soon.
