Hi,

I am considering a 29er build and need to know if some of my parts bin parts will work. I have a set of XT rapid fire shifters with attached brake levers (not new STI, maybe a few years old). Will these work with Shimano mechanical disk brakes?

Thanks

Unless they're real old. They need to be V-brake levers.

I'd guess the shifter/brake levers are maybe 3 years old. I imagine they were designed for V-brakes. I guess what I really need to know is whether mechanical disk brakes require disk brake specific levers?

I'm hoping these would work because it saves me from having to buy shifters and brake levers, probably saves me $150 or so to buy comprable new components to replace.

Nope, a lever for v brakes will fill the bill. A canti lever won't work w/o some tweaking.
