I'm in for the 100. This will be my second century, completed the CCC last weekend. Looking to average around 20 mph if anyone is interested in joining. My wife is riding also, she is planning to ride the 50 mile route, she will probably average around 15 mph. I hope we have great weather like we did last weekend!

Long range forecast is calling for mid/upper 70s, 40% chance of rain, 5-6mph winds NNE. Of course that will change a half dozen times between now and Sunday.

I ambitiously signed up for the HHH waaaaaay back in April. I am definitely going to be riding. This will be my second century and the first on my new bike.

I'd love to meet other BF members. I won't be arriving until Sunday morning. If you see me, say hello as you pass on the left :)

I heard the cookies at the 75 mile stop are out-of-this-world.

This is my bike, and this is me (on the left)

Rain I can handle, but a strong headwind will kill me!

5-6 is a lot better than 15-20 like it was last year! If the chance of rain stays pat, I may ride the Fuji, or even my single speed (if I get time to put the fenders back on this week).

I'm waiting to see if I can ride at all.
I managed to crash sunday night, (lol, 0 mph too) got my fat foot suck in the pedal strap. Now I have a knot on my left hip, and pain in my left (Repaired) knee. If it doesn't rain tomorrow, I go out and see if the leg can take it.

Tom & MarinerFan, what kind of a pace do you like to keep on the flats? I'm thinking about riding the singlespeed, since it looks like there might be some rain, but even when I put the 15 tooth freewheel cog on that's only gonna give me about 75 gear inches...which will probably limit me to 20mph or so tops at 90rpm.

You get to feeling this 'chipper', we're really gonna get cranking - cuz my ole lady will be chasing us down with blood in her eye!

I think the 42-15 should be ok if I decide to ride the SS.

Good news..

I seem to have sustained no serious damage.
But, I think I'm going for the Metric and see how I feel from there.

I also have a question for you guys, Mind if I tag along?? If you drop me, thats fine, I'm just looking for a challenge. I think I could hold 18-20 for at least the first leg of the ride.

Like I said, If I get dropped, it's not like I'm gonna get lost or something. :D

I'm not that fast. Realistically I'll be riding more around 16 than 20 to make it that far. I figure Chip will drop me like a bad habit on his single speed and sandals. :D

The only thing I'm debating about is which bike to take. My roadie would be the easiest to ride this distance but if it rains I'll probably want to use my commuter bike with fenders.

I figure we can all meet up at the start and at least begin the ride together. Cheri is riding, so I ain't gonna be setting any speed records, especially if I take the single speed. Let's decide on a meet-up time...we can meet right at the 'line' which is the exit from the HS to the road. I don't figure anyone can miss me...or Cheri's pinked-out bike (pic below). So what time is good for anyone who wants to start the ride together?

I'm having a 'which bike' dilemma myself...the road bike is the fastest and most comfy, but it's not for rain rides. The Fuji, which is my primary commuter, is another choice, but it's heavier and has a triple, which is a real waste for this ride. My rain bike is in pieces and my winter bike isn't comfy for distance, so that leaves the single speed. (I decided to leave the gearing as-is too). I guess the Saturday morning forecast will make up my mind.

On a sad note, Tom isn't gonna be able to make it. He says the rain will make him melt and reveal his true identity, which is a violation of the Super Hero code of ethics.

I don't want to use my commuter bike but it would probably be the best bet.

I'll be wearing a jersey that looks like this.

Rain?? YIKES...the Orca is a mammal....the Blue Orca is a dry land mammal!! Although, it would be a great place to bring the Softride being there is no climbing....ahhh but alas, I'm thinking I won't be making the trip. LSU game Saturday night.....racing Saturday morning....LSU game Saturday night....it's probably going to be raining....LSU game Saturday night....It's an awfully long drive after an LSU game Saturday night....did you know there was an LSU game Saturday night??? They're playing some over-ranked team from that basketball conference along the atlantic coast. Funny thing is, they'll probably stay in the polls...as opposed to an un-named Big 10 team that was ranked fairly high and lost last weekend....

50% chance of rain, brings equipment choice into question, no fender room on the Trek 330, (27's on a 700 frame) I can either toss the 520 together fast, or ride a Ted Williams free spirit.

I've actually thought of riding my road bike anyway. A little rain ain't going to hurt it.

Without fenders, 100 miles in the rain with your butt straddling it WILL hurt a Brooks. I have Brooks on all my bikes, which is why I am probably going to ride one that has fenders on it.

As far as football...I watched Ohio State(1) beat Texas(2) in the motel room on Saturday night last year.

Good point! Especially with my fat arse on it. So it's the bike with fenders for me.

What is it with organizied rides and rain in Ohio? At least my son and I will be prepared for the rain this weekend. We will be riding what you see below bike wise, now with hi-visability cycling rain jackets.

Ok, I now have another cheap set of fenders, and enough parts to get the 520 together, so it's going to be a fast build up tonight, and maybe 20 miles worth of testing tomorrow. So look for me on a ancient Trek 520 with rack, fenders and probably a trunk bag...I'll post a pic tomorrow.

VA Tech is highly over-rated...they are being touted as a defensive power house...the best in the country last year, blah, blah, blah, blah, blah......Of course, if my high school team played in the ACC, they would have had a great defense, also. I think the Hokies are ranked #9 or something....at least until Monday....

As for the Buckeye nation....they may do good in their own conference....and were impressive against the over-rated Longhorns (who have to go out and campaign for popularity votes to stay in the polls)...but we saw what last year's SEC Champs did to them....

SEC Football Rules College Football!! (Even if Tennessee is making us look bad!)

Ok, the 520 is ready to go, it's kinda Fugly, (Friday morning it was a winter restoratrion project/frameset) But everything seems to be working, it just looks like it's been sitting in a barn for 20 years or so. I'll get a pic tomorrow before I take it out on a shakedown ride to make sure everything is ready.

I'll try to make it to the line by 7:30 and wait around till 8 at the latest for anyone who wants start out as a group. I'll be on my Fuji, Cheri on her pinked-out Giant. If I'm not wearing a jacket you'll probably be able to spot my Skynyrd jersey.

Road Fan,

Thanks,
Other than hitting a few minor snags it worked out pretty well, It did fine on it's 10 mile shakedown ride. I did learn that a '83 520 will not take fenders when running on 27 X 1-1/4 tires. It's seems pretty comfortable.

Bad news is there is a 70% chance of rain all day tomorrow!

I'm back,
Met up wirh Mr&Mrs Chipcom, and Mariner Fan at the start, it was raining, and it diddn't look like it was going to stop, so we headed out. Half a mile out Half Bent (Dan) and his son Tyler caught us and joined up. We never managed to find nocondorfx.

It rained, then it rained, and then it rained more. I managed to make it 62 miles and finish the metric, I don't think thats bad for a 220lb guy with a bad knee, on 35lb's of ancient touring bike, (built from spare partrs) fenders and all.

I only managed to allmost cause an accident once.. I went back for a $10 bill that was in the road.:D

Im back.
Last night i went to the black swamp fest and then the bars, so i didn't get the best sleep, or nutrition, but this morning the pancakes must have given me superman energy. I wasn't sure if i could finish the century, but i did it in a better time than i thought i would.

I passed you guys actually within the first 10 miles. I thought I saw chip, then i rode past and at the last second saw the pink bar tape on a silver giant, and figured it was you guys. I really should have said hi, and rode for a few, but i was in the zone, sorry; next time we get a ride going i'll be sure to tagalong with you guys for some miles.

anyways:

stats: 102 miles in 5 hours and 25 minutes. :)

im soaked. time to take a shower.

I had a great time. Mainly because I got to meet Half_Bent, Redneckwes, and Mr. and Mrs. Chip.

As for the ride; I had a case of the dead legs. I don't know why that happens but once in awhile I just don't have much punch. We rode in the rain throughout the day and I was soaked to the bone.

So, what do I think of the Hancock Horizontal Hundred? I'll be there next year! :D

My bike is a mess! Not sure if my Brooks saddle is toast. I tried to mold it back into shape, but it's not looking too good.

Soggy day, but the sun felt great when it finally showed.

Had a personal best for the century 5:53 thanks to some amazing riding partners and my new bike. All in all, was a glad I made it, despite the rain.
