I'm taking about the kind that goes into the receiver of a rear tow hitch.

Here are some of the brands I'm aware of. sportworks, Draft Master, Thule & Rhode Gear. I'm not sure but doesn't Yakima offer one too. There may be others I'm not aware of.

This advisory is for any rear receiver hitch carrier.

The advisory is as follows:

If you use a carriers such as is mentioned above it is very important that you add some kind of reflective material to the carrier. Most if not all of the carriers are painted black. Which is very hard for other drivers to see at night and for some reason during ther day time too.

Some of these carriers such as the Sportworks and the Draft Master block part of the rear tail lights on some vehicles.

A good reflective material to use is small round reflectors, the red/white reflective tape & the yellow/black reflective tape. You need to make an out line of the carrier so other drivers know there is something there and to not get to close to you.

This is especially true for the Sportworks carrier because when in use and "folded down" if there are 2 trays it sticks out from behind a vehicle about 36". The Sportworks is a tray style carrier.

Photos of an example to follow soon.

End of advosory.

I use the Sportworks carrier to haul our recumbents. And until I added the reflectors and tape I had a problem with drivers getting to close. Not any more.

So please before an idiot driver rear ends you do what you can to help prevent it if you use a rear receiver hitch style carrier.

thanks.

Anecdote: Several years ago one of my friends was sitting in a parking lot in some park in Seattle changing his clothes before a race. He heard and felt a crunch--it was his Trek OCLV being crushed by a driver backing out of the space opposite his, right into the bike on the back of the car!

My Hollywood Teamrider came with reflector tape.

However, I'm considering replacing my hitchrack's endcap (removable so you can add a +2 bike carrier extension) with the bumper bar from Delta. I think it should fit.

i like that rack Khoun! i have a swagman- S curve to go over my cars fin- i particularily like the way it juts out- keeps the dufus's away from my car- yeah it has some reflection on it- but it also lets my car lights show really well. Anyone backs into me- their car gets hurt first.. my bike goes on the the first clamps closest to the car.
