From all the good comments I heard about old school 01 and later Marzocchis, I started looking into the new ones. Fell in love with the features of the XC retro series like TST (5 stage adjustable setting for different terrain), ETA (a sort of lockout that you can do at any compression height but with a little flex [30mm] ), and they offer them in coil/oil + air assist or straight up air. Lots of features.

But started talking to different LBS guys at all the local stores and they have nothing but bad things to say about the new Marzocchis, they they really dropped the ball and manufacturing quality (which has been outsourced to Asia) has gone way down and their customer service has also gone way down. Chronic TST cartridge failures... One of the shops has literally returned more than they sold... Marzocchi also list their weights without the steerer tube which is bogus. Bummer because the fork I was looking at, about $330-$350 really was a hell of a deal. The XC700 (which is the one that most appealed to me, all of these features, coil + the air assist better for heavier guy like me). But is now discontinued. My guess is possibly quality related...

All my LBS guys are saying RockShox has really gotten it together and their stuff is performing really well. Bummer there is cost/benefit of the RockShox, in terms of features, versus the pricepoints for the Marzocchis is much worse. But I guess you get what you pay for regardless and seems like there are really no good deal, you always get what you pay for..

Do you guys agree? Again the wisdom of the LBS, good guys who know their stuff!!

Every person has their own opinion of what kind of suspension fork is best. There are a bunch of people who swear by marzocchi. While there are people that love fox, there are even some that like manitou. There are people that like Rock Shox.

You'll get a better product from any company when you buy their higher end product, even then you will get the random lemon of a fork. Fox, Marzocchi, Rock Shox, Manitou all have their problems. With the 2008 Talas forks 32 and 36, there have been issues with the Talas system not working. Oil levels with Marzocchi are always hit and miss. You will also hear of the random fork gets stuck in mid compression from the dual air rock shox forks. The problem manitou is facing this year is the archs cracking and the move to Wisconsin.

Personally, I'm a rock shox person, it's the only brand of fork that I'll run.

I agree with that idea, but I just edited to mention that it was literally all the guys at all the local stores here, all five of them, and all citing direct experience.. For what its worth.. I believe them, most of these guys really know their stuff as we are pretty strong biking community around here...

I'm also citing direct experience, being a lbs mechanic when I'm not here or riding.
