Bike thieves getting busted. Saw this while watching their videos on tracking ipods. Didn't see any posts on it when I searched.
Thanks for the link. Interesting video.

So why don't the police try on of these 'stings' each year? Seemed to be effective.

Did you notice the cop in the first instance riding up on a bike with Spinergy's? That's awesome.

funny. my ipod could have used then when UPS or DHL "lost" mine. upside- apple gave me a brand new one much nicer than the one they were repairing.

It's not. There are too many bike theves. You could do this every day and you still would have a problem.
There's too much money to be made and the risk of getting caught is very low. I suspect that sentences are likely pretty leniant, too.

It would be cool if they could rig the target bike with an automatic front brake that could be controlled with a remote control unit. When the perp is speeding away from the scene, someone would press a button that would send the perp flying over the handlebars.
Unfortunately, the perp would probably end up suing the police dept.

The first guy only shattered his ankle? I respectfully submit, alanbikehouston, that THESE guys are the reason God invented the baseball bat.
Gotta love the bike messenger: "I carry the cable cutters to repair my bike." Batter up!

Looks like they need a Citizen's Vigilance Committee in that 'hood.
Good link, but that video is very old.

And unfortunately, as this oldy moldy video shows, this is the reality of bike theivery. You can do it on broad daylight and even cops that witness it will do nothing.

The one I watched had cops chasing the first guy, threatening to break down his door, and slapping the handcuffs on after he jumped out of a fourth story window.
Of course, it was a sting...
And it was a made for TV 20/20 special!
Nice wheels on the police bike.

this was on TV earlier today, couldn't help but laugh at that crazy messenger. " I Carry these bolt cutters to repair my bike" definitely puts things into perspective though; like they say, locks only keep honest people honest. if somebody wants your bike, they WILL get it.

Maybe we should bring back good old fashion lynching a la horsetheives. I had a new campy equiped Frejus stolen in 1969 and I still get pissed when I think about it. Lucky I didn't catch the person because I might be languishing in a maximum security prison serving out a life sentence...
Nice wheels on the police bike.
Yea, back then they all wanted to look like they were on the Pacific Blue TV show.
