General Cycling Discussion - is there

Bikeforums.net is a forum about nothing but bikes. Our community can help you find information about hard-to-find and localized information like bicycle tours, specialties like where in your area to have your recumbent bike serviced, or what are the best bicycle tires and seats for the activities you use your bike for.

No. Chromium is not only very expensive, but it has lousy strength properties.
There are, however, "Cro-Mo" frames, where the steel is alloyed with chromium and molybdenum.
There was a time when frames were chrome plated, but I don't think it's done any more.

It'll either be chrome plated (mmm, shiny) or chrome-molybdnum (sp?), or maybe both. Chromoly (aka chormo) is a very good steel alloy for bikes, most BMXs are made from it and I'd imagine a lot of MTBs too. Chrome plate is all about looks.

Sometimes, when you strip the paint off of an old steel frame, it is completely chrome plated underneath. I've seen chrome plated steel frames....looks rather nice. Also, polished aluminum or titanium frames look like they're chrome plated. Cannondale and GT aluminum frames were at one time available highly polished and looked nice & chromy.... I don't think you friend is pulling your leg in this instance.
Yes there were all Chromed bikes (not chromium
but Cro Moly frames plated).
One of my all time favourite bikes is an all chrome
Schwinn Paramount, very popular in the 70's.
Alot of Italian Bikes were chromed prior to painting in
that era also (good one George).
Your friend may very well be correct.

Marty is correct. My early 80's Italian road bike is Columbus SL tubing which was chrome-plated and painted over. Of course, paint doesn't adhere very well to chrome so the paint immediately began to chip/flake off after I purchased it.
When I had it repainted years later, the painter bead-blasted the entire frame prior to painting it. The second paint job has held up much better.
