I'm toying with the idea of building up a SS/fixie. I don't have a frame yet but I do have some questions about the conversion. From what I've read, the rear wheel seems to be the primary component that undergoes a conversion. If I were to buy a new flip flop rear hub, would I be able to salvage the rear rim by replacing the old freewheel hub with the new hub and new spokes? Also I was curious as to whether I could make the rear wheel a quick release to facilitate switching from fixed to singlespeed. Is there any increased likelihood that the quick release axle would not be able to hold the wheel in place during fixed use?
