Commuting - bike recommendation for a tall guy

Bikeforums.net is a forum about nothing but bikes. Our community can help you find information about hard-to-find and localized information like bicycle tours, specialties like where in your area to have your recumbent bike serviced, or what are the best bicycle tires and seats for the activities you use your bike for.

I am a very tall guy at 6'10". I was wondering if one bike mfg. made XL frames (26" or >) for a hybrid/commuter bike. I don't need an ultra expensive bike but am willing to pay for a lighter bike since I'll be getting the bike on/off a train to commute.

Which mfg makes the largest/lightest frames for a good means of transportation.

Thanks
Ray

You may have to go custom, unless you can find a used huge bike on fleabay. I see old bikes with frames larger than 64cm on there sometimes. Be patient and wait for the right one. There's usually one or two gargnatuan bikes a month passing through there. Another option would be to make a 62cm/63cm lightweight into a "tourist" style bike by putting a larger saddle and upright bars with the corresponding brake levers on it. You don't need to spend a lot of money to get rolling, unless you have disposable income.

The Cycles Valhalla 2XLT is a virtual 68cm frame, with a 63.5cm horizontal top tube measurement. It is designed with clearance for 700C tires up to 32mm. Frame is made of high strength 7005 aluminum. Fork is carbon fiber. Price is $750 for frame and fork. I'd be glad to work with you to build up a complete bike.

At 6'10" you could definitely make this frame and fork work for you, although you are at the high end of the height range for this bike. Still, with the right stem and bars you could be quite comfy. The tubing is strong enough to handle riders up to 350lb.
