Why do some people feel that placing an asterisk in the middle of a word beginning with the letter "f" and ending with the letter "k" is disguise enough to make the word socially acceptable? Do they really think most people aren't offended by their crude language and innuendos?

svidrod
08-03-07, 09:15 PM
exactly, which is why censoring the words are so pointless. if we edit out half the word, or even the entire thing, or replace it with a phonetically similar word; we aren't really avoiding what is being said. so why bother censoring? if someone is going to use a word that is considered offensive by some members, hiding it isn't going to change the meaning conveyed. personally i don't take offense to a word, any word, and i think its rather pointless to get angered by it.

cliffs: don't censor because we all know what you meant anyway, if you can't handle the word get over yourself

The board censors the words for us.

And for the OP, does it really bother you that much to read a foul word?

Personally i don't give a **** what people say and i think that if you come across a few ****ing swears on a message board and it bothers you then your life is a bit too simple.

Having said that, those people who go around getting cute with with their *'s or spelling words "wrong"...you don't need to break forum rules to get your point across, and you know what? You can still say whatever the **** you want. I can drop as many f bombs as i ****ing please because the ****ing board blocks the ****ing things for me for ****s sake

Censorship like that is distinctly a US traight. Look anywhere else in the world and nudity, sex, and swearing is a small issue for regular TV. But here in the US, we can watch and endless stream of violence on daytime TV, but sex, swearing and nudity are the real problems. Yes indeed, hap hazardly censoring swearwords so everyone still knows what they are is just peachy. Yes it's complete idiocy, but that's the US culture.

What bothers me most is when they censor movies. I had the misfortune of getting sucked into Forrest Gump while channel surfing the other night on TBS or one of those other crap channels that censor movies. Instead of **** happens, they came up with " IT Happens" on the bumper sticker. Don't even get me started on trying to watch "The Big Lebowski" on TBS. What a travesty. Who are they kidding? Words are just words. They don't have any power except what we give them. Everyone needs to get their panties unwadded. Swearing is fun!

Words are just words. They don't have any power except what we give them.

Oh, I think there are quite a few who would disagree with you and take the viewpoint that "the pen is mightier than the sword" any day.

I quit a forum a couple of years ago for overly censoring their board. First it was "dick". The board's filters automatically **'d out that one, so if someone's name was Dick, you couldn't use their name. Stupid.

Then I made a post about something and used the word "fugly". It was censored. When I complained to the mods, they gave me a warning. I did some digging with the search function and pushed back that many people had used that particular word, including mods and they warned me again. I told them all to go f themselves and left. What a bunch of primadonnas; and most were very stereotypical rednecks. It was a Dodge Diesel Ram forum!

During the tumultuous 1968 Democratic National Convention, Connecticut Senator Abraham Ribicoff, during a speech in which he nominated the anti-Vietnam War candidate George McGovern, departed from his written text to say, "If George McGovern were president, we wouldn't have these Gestapo tactics in the streets of Chicago." Many conventioneers, having been appalled by the response of the Chicago police to the simultaneously occurring anti-war demonstrations, promptly broke into ecstatic applause. As television cameras focused on an indignant Chicago Mayor Richard J. Daley, lip-readers throughout America claimed to have observed him shouting, "**** you, you Jew mother****er." Defenders of the mayor would later claim that he was calling Senator Ribicoff a "faker" or a "fink." (When queried later by reporters as to what it was Daley had said, Ribicoff said it was "a four-letter word beginning with 'mother'".)

TDR or some other forum? What I find funny is all of the rednecks I've met ****in' say ****, ****, hell, *****, ass, and **** every other word. And it's not like they're trying to clean up their image online... "I BOMB'd the *****, and sooted that ricer! Git'r'done!"

The Forum Guidelines (http://bikeforums.net/faq.php?faq=forum_guidelines)say the following:
"As a community with a diverse variety of members and readers, we ask that our members to post without using vulgarity. Vulgarity not only includes vulgar language and pictures but also sexist, racist, anti-religious and homophobic language which may offend other members. In addition, the "masking" of vulgarity by inserting * or another keystroke in place of one or more letters in a vulgar term is unacceptable in most cases."
If you don't like it, or don't want to play by the rules, then go somewhere else.

Who gives a flying f*ck?

I,ve often wonder how that phrase would be put to task? We.ve all used it one time or another.
Would it be a frisky frequent flyer?
A circus type act with a trapeze?
A parachuting mishap?
My guess is that it was coined in WW2 when pilots were forced to go on a dangerous bombing run over Dresden. When they learned at the briefing of the destination, they told the commander(under their breath),to take a "flying F".

Krink, we have a word for people who don't like to play by the rules in society: criminals. Seriously, if you don't like the rules, don't play. Acting like a six year old and insulting somebody when they say something you don't like is silly and childish. All this comes down to is that you who got offended by me posting the fourm guidelines felt bad about it, but instead of recognizing the truth, chose to get defensive instead. Sometimes I can't stand whiners.

Krink

I love whiners. Then again, I love everyone.

I was offended by your light saber thingy, but not so much now that I've learned that it's a light saber thingy. I still don't like to be confronted by such ambiguous images, I'm a bit of prude I know, but I will try to tolerate your choices and the ways you express them. Perhaps the fault does lie with this "George Lucas" character, and my real complaint lies with him. As you know, takes all kinds to make a forum.

My own word for people who don't like to play by the rules in society: politicians.

Gotta love the double standards in the south, "F" Bombs are ok, and adultery is ok as long as no one finds out about it, and even a molesting preacher can be forgiven, because he's a "good man" but you say goddamn, its unbelievable

It's like you can meet a girl at church down here, take her home and bang her, she'll ask you too stick your hand up her ass, and thats all cool until you say "goddamned that's tight" Then she starts to cry and says "i don't say "GD""....
