I am thinking of having my frame powder coated, but the process involves "burning" (http://www.custompowdercoating.com/burnoff.aspx) off any old paint and grease, sand blasting, and then baking on the powder coating.

My question is; will this have and effect on the frames heat-treat?

I'm no expert, but the heat treat process is several hundred degrees higher for the heat treating of the frame I believe...

why not just go with the sandblasting, if the person doing it knows what they are doing it should be fine. I've had a frame stipped this way and friends have had tandems done. I think with the burn off the are taking industrial finishes (engine blocks and paint room equip)
Our powder caot ovens at work heat to i think 400 degress for 1/2 hour. Thats where I had my frame done. Take it to work and hand it to the finish room guys and a day later it was sitting beside my toolbox.

I don't want to insult anyone's intelligence, so if you already know this, please take no offense.
Make sure the frame is well masked before the powder coat. As a general rule, any place that has bare metal before the powder coat should be bare after the powder coat. The powder coat is relatively thick. If, for example, you powder coat an area in which bearing races seat, the races may no longer fit.
I think powder coating is magical. Its super tough and looks great.

ONLY if it's a KLEIN frame.

If it is a Klein, they DO NOT recommend stripping the original finish (paint) for any reason. To rePAINT, lightly scuff the original paint, then primer & so on. Powdercoating is NOT an option.
Has to do with some propriatary treatment of the aluminum.

Aside from that, powdercoating is fine for bike frames.

I have an old Raliegh Technium frame in need of paint. Will the heat of a powder coat oven ruin the bonded joints on a glued frame?
