Southern California - How to effectively survey bikers in san diego?

Bikeforums.net is a forum about nothing but bikes. Our community can help you find information about hard-to-find and localized information like bicycle tours, specialties like where in your area to have your recumbent bike serviced, or what are the best bicycle tires and seats for the activities you use your bike for.

Hi everyone

I am brand new to this forum, currently i am working with caltran and we are trying to survey bicyclist and pedestrian. THis survey is for Caltran 2010 pedestrian and bicyclist planning, and they hope to improve the condition to encourage more pedestrian and bicyclist instead of car on the road.

My question is that, how do can i get bicyclist on the street at polling to participate? Most bicyclist seem to past by really fast or say no before they even know that it is a caltran survey. We are getting some signs made to increase visibility, but is there anything that you guy would recogmend that we do?

thanks

Perhaps you should contact some cycling clubs, such as SDBC, to try to get input from their members.

Try standing near the top of some of the local climbs they're going slow then, and usually would welcome a short conversation about that time. ;)

Just kidding, I think the best way is to contact the local cycling clubs and bike shops. more likely to get cyclists who will give you input.

Good luck, we need more bikefriends out there!

that's where i would start. maybe create an in-depth online survey and ask clubs to link to it on their own websites. also try placing your survey at bike shops and see if you can't maybe get employees to mention it to customers.

Can you post one on-line one here?

+ 1 on contacting local clubs. You can contact the Public relations driector of SDBC here:

I also avoid survey in most cases, as they are often for commercial purposes. I think if you had some sort of sign saying that you are from Caltrans and the survey is to improve bicycle commuting in the city, I would like stop to participate.

Most clubs are members of the larger San Diego County Bicycle Coalition. http://www.sdcbc.org

The OP seems more interested in bicycle commuting not what is best for recreational bicyclists. I attended a meeting last year where bicycle commuting plans for the county were being reviewed. The meeting was saturated with recreational bicyclists whose interests leaned more toward the remote areas of the county. Commuters are interested in getting to work or shopping areas, using streets that are normally avoided by recreational bicyclists. They may be interested in how to incorporate public transportation where that is of no interest to recreational bicyclists. Unfortunately, bicycle commuters aren't normally neatly assembled into a club.

Zyman's suggestion of the Coronado ferry is good, especially if done at commute time. Trains as well. Find bicyclists parked at office buildings downtown. I don't know the area well enough to know but I would encourage the OP to visit the Commuter forum here http://www.bikeforums.net/forumdisplay.php?f=20 and ask the same question.

Anyone notice how the OP has remained silent...
You'd think if they were truly interested they would be involved in the thread, at least
every 8 hours or so.

Can you smell a troll....?

Why do you smell a troll???

To the OP, get hold of the guy at www.bikelink.com
He is in charge of California Bike to Work Day, and could give you some great information. You might even be able to use their huge e-mail list to contact commuters. If you can't get hold of him through the web site, PM me and I will try to help out.

Just hang around at any Starbucks and you'll get good results.

I like blueberry muffins.

And when Steven Seagal slaps guys then pushes them against walls. That's neat.

And when I catch my wife staring at me.

ps. OP...most cyclists will not stop for a guy with a clipboard. Best to pursue the rare moment when a cyclist is actually not riding his bike. You have to look hard, but they're out there...normally at Starbucks...or Pannikin on the 101.

My dad said the bikers used to hang out in Ocean Beach back in the '60s, but I think you will have better luck finding bikers in the east county now.

I was in O.B. today FYI and there is still plenty of bikers there.

sorry everyone

i had this thread on alert but somehow it didn't notify me of any posting until 11:09 pm san diego time ( just now). As to explain our relationship with caltran, we are a transportation design company and we have a contract with caltran to design a plan that will improve pedestrian and bicyclist traffic by 2010.

Other members are correct in indicating that we are more interest in commuter bikers than recreational bicyclist, since they are more in caltran jurisdiction than recreational bicyclist.

My survey is stored at work, so i will try to upload a copy when i can. But thanks everyone for your help, i will contact the bike to work person for his opinion. And i will definitelly try to add the coronado ferry location to our list to be surveyed.

Question! Why do you need to actually survey cyclists when they are in the process of riding (or ferry-ing)? Most of us know what we'd like to see change in the future without being in spandex. (Indolent58 and Chucklehead are the exceptions)

Post your survey here, and we will attempt to give you honest and realistic goals...like giving me a personal bikeway from my home to work...independent from all existing roads...nothing too special...just an elevated road that lords over all other roads and it's only entrance is from my front door. It's freshly paved, rock and glass-free, with a Starbucks at which to pose.

All spandex, all of the time.

Which brings up an idea. I see lots of commuters committing serious fashion felonies. Gym shorts and T-shirts, full office causal with their Dockers cuffs stuffed into dress socks on the drive side :eek: , sometimes it's too hard to look.

How about an official Team Caltrans Commuter Kit? Bibs, jersey, socks and matching helmet. The bibs would need to be Assos.

The only thing that is going to get people to commute by bicycle more is if the cost of operating a car go way way up and crowding gets to a point where it is faster to commute by bike.

I think all you have to do is to look at europe and see where people commute and don't commute. Even in PARTS of europe the car is becoming king and you mostly see the elderly on the bike running errands and not the younger people.

But don't forget recreational facilities for bikers either. Even if people don't commute by bicycle there is still a need for people to get out and ride a bike for heath and mental benefits.
