My girlfriend, daughter and I are moving to Portland in a couple weeks, I have a job set up, no apartment yet, but soon. My dad has a pick-up truck and will haul the stuff that we are taking with us. The things we are not taking are the stumbling blocks. We aren't taking our bed, couch, computer desk, because they are ragged, trashpicked junk. I don't really have a trailer capable of hauling a couch or mattresses. Do places like goodwill offer delivery services? I can't really expect my dad to drive all the way up there to drive a couch 6 miles or whatever. Suggestions? experiences?
If you buy the furniture new, they'll happily deliver it to you. If you buy it at a thrift store or used place, probably not. Maybe you can can go to your dad's house, borrow the truck, use it, bring it back, and then return to Portland. Or just rent a truck. People have moved with bikes and trailers, it's possible, and I admire them for it, but it seems to me that moving is an occasion when it's totally appropriate to use a truck.

Live for a week without that stuff, make a couple friends, hook one up with cash and have them drive you to get the couch and such. Also Home Depot rents trucks if you don't want to call in a favor.

I don't believe Goodwill delivers, but I strongly encourage you to subscribe to the Shift list (http://lists.riseup.net/www/info/shift). You can make a post there and see if someone with a heavy-hauler trailer would be willing to help you out. There are some folks in town who'd do it for the promise of beer, pizza, and good company afterwards. The Bike Move (http://www.shift2bikes.org/wiki/bikefun:move_x_bike) people are a great bunch.
You should PM me when you're closer to your move date. :)

Ask around... there are plenty of people that will move stuff for a small fee. I had a whole room full of furniture delivered for about $30... and they loaded and unloaded it. Well worth the money. :)
