First the ride report: OUCH! I started at 8:30 and it was hot. I'm not a dripper but today I was. That's all I gotta say about that!:D
Now for the conditions ans sucky part. Someone had the bright idea of using GMR as a dump site. 4 miles before the village was just covered with JUNK. Debris everywhere. Sticks, boards, roofing shingles, bottles, you name it. Looks like someone dragged an old mobile home through the road. Or maybe an old outhouse? Be very careful as many of the boards had nails. I thought about moving some of the debris off the road but I saw 3 ranger vehicles cruising the area. Paired in two's, windows up, AC blowing, and drinking Slurpees!
About 5 miles and 4 miles from the botom, seems someone has repaired a few holes in the road. Blacktop has a few patches. Didn't look rough but when I hit the patches, I almost lost grip of my HB's a couple of times.
Early in the ride, I was at least 30 times by crotch rockets. Nothing near but sure hard to concentrate when you hear 5 or 6 coming at once.
All 4 are pics are from different areas. Didn't have enough film to take pics of the junk between. I know a couple of riders plan on doing the ride on Sunday so be careful. I hope it will be cleaned up by then. But I doubt it, they were pretty big Slurpees!:D

Why do you refer to the area in those photos as GMR?

Thanks for sharing, Fred. But is that on Glendora Mountain Road or Glendora Ridge Road before descending into the village? Also, how was the traffic?

Thats why I was asking why he said GMR... Because that look slike GRR to me... :D

GMR I've always known as Glendora Mt Ridge Rd. Road that goes from Glendora to Mt Baldy Village.
Wasn't till I got involved with this forum that I heard it called Glendora Ridge Rd. Portions of it called Glendora Mtn Rd, Big GMr, Lil GMR.
I'm still not sure of the exact names of each road so I still call it GMR!:D
Starts near Lonehill and Rt 66 in Glendora and ends at Mt Baldy Rd near Baldy Village.
Many riders use it as a hill training course. 21 mile climb with nearly 5,000ft of climbing. Then 21 miles of mostly bombing downhill.
Just a favorite for many riders.

I wasn't sure if that was your reasoning or if you didn't know which was which, but I wanted clarification too. I'm always saying GMR and GRR and I think that's confusing to those who don't know the road. Obviously, you've been up there. ;)

4 miles before the village. I think that makes it Glendora Ridge Rd.:D...right near Cow CYn Saddle.

To tell you the truth, I didn't really love GMR when I was living in SoCal ... but then again, that's because I hated hills back then. Now that I have lived in NorCal for 8 years, and I can't help but climb hills around here, I love hills ... but as I said before, I can't climb that. Now, I love GMR and GRR (because of the change in my riding style).
The terrible, having all that junk and debris on the road. That's a real hazard.

The road that starts at E. Sierra Madre in Glendora is GMR (Glendora Mt. Rd.) when you get to the fork at the top GMR continues downward to the left. The road to your right at the fork when coming from the Glendora side of GMR is where GRR (Glendora Ridge Rd.) begins. GRR continues to the Baldy village. GMR continues down into East Fork Cyn. where there is "the river community". I think they call that "east fork village". You can always tell if your on GMR or GRR by the road stripes. GRR has only white lines on either side and no signs along the road telling you of turns ahead, just white reflector sticks. GMR on the other hand has proper signage and road stripes.
I must say I have never ridden this road on my bike. Although I have spent many many many late nights driving up there.

I figured it was that way. Jus didn't know that lil GMR was part of big GMR. Now I know the props.:P

As far as traffic, only saw 2 cars. But like I said, passed by 30 motosickles. But I think it may have been the same 10 over and over.

That's strange. The two times I have ridden it since it reopened to cars, I have seen a total of 7 cars. Four one time and three the other. I haven't seen any crotch rockets. Both times have been on Saturdays but I was up there much later than you. A friend of mine who rides a crotch rocket and also races bicycles told me that he and his friends don't ride the GMR side because the bottom is too tight. I guess that doesn't stop all of them.

Oh they were all over the GMR side and GRR on the way up. On the return, I only saw 2. I was thinking maybe it gets too hot for them with the leathers so they ride early.

I'm with Fred, I have been riding up there since 1989 and did my share of late night driving up there in the late 90s and have always just called it GMR. Everyone that I have train with are the same and always know what we are talking about. If we are riding GMR we are going up from Glendora and across to Baldy. We just call the climb up from East Fork Cyn., East Fork even though it is technically GMR. If we are doing East Fork, we ride up through Azusa Cyn. and up East Fork (my favorite way).
BTW a very short section of GRR is striped. It is near the top of the 20 minute climb (which would really get technical to describe since it actually takes 15 minutes if you are riding fast, it is the longest climbing section on GRR).

East Fork Rd. is technically the section of road between Asuza cyn. Rd. and GMR where it makes a fast 180* turn.
So GMR from E. Sierra Madre to GRR (the fork) is open now?
My car friends and I would always call GMR two things... Front Side and Back side and for short we would call GRR "the Ridge". At first before we ever looked at a map we would call the 'front side' GMR and then the backside 'east fork' and GRR we would just call 'baldy'. At the time none of us had ever driven down GRR because we didn't know where it ended up and always told folklore stories of how it was a never ending road.... if you drove on it, you would never come back.:D

I know. I'm with you on the front side and back side as well. Anyone I now if you ask them their time up East Fork they will give you a split that represents their time from the yellow gate just past the 180 to the yellow gate at the 5.0 mile marker which was recently reopened, definitely not from Azusa Cyn. Rd. to the 180, although, I could tell you my time from Azusa Cyn. Rd. to the top and from the 180 to the top. How was that for a run on sentence?

Thanks for the heads up Mr. B. :D Our original plan was to do GMR repeats, rolling at 6:00 a.m. but sleep sounded better. :p We didn't roll until 9:00 a.m. and considering I've been off the bike (a couple of rides here and there and just started training again this week) since Eastern Sierra on June 2nd...I just wasn't feelin' the repeats so we actually did take GRR to the village. Most of the debris is off the road, but it was nice to know to look for it because there were still pieces of wood here and there, just where you said they would be!
Nice day out there today...lots of motorcycles, but they seemed mellow and just a few cars.

It was cool when we started out, but quickly warmed up. Well, I thought it was hot...George thought it was fine. Whatever. :p We had planned on doing repeats originally and I definitely could have used another bottle on GRR...in fact that's the first time that I've scared myself about not having enough fluids. Ice water at the village was just what I needed!
BTW...I am Le Suck. Spent the whole month of July on Le Couch watching Le Tour and not Le Riding. It's unbelievable how quickly cardio fitness plummets. I've been riding the last four days and have barely a hint of soreness in my legs...my lungs and my heart...another story.

I was wondering about the heat today. Starts out cool till the climbing start, then the sun always seems to find it way from behind the clouds. I know what you mean about the water. I startegically drink mine at certain points hoping I don't run out!
Don't worry, I'm sure your fitness will come back in the snap of the fingers. At this point, I'm sure your Le Suck would easily kick my Le Tortilla ***! But just wait till next year!:p
