been gone for awhile. Are people riding up Griffith Park past the little barrier at the top of the Travel Town hill? You know...to like the observatory and such? Is it still closed?

That gate is almost always closed but you can hop over and ride to the top, and down the other side to the observatory. I've been up there numerous times since the May fire.

I went up to there tues around 12 and the gate was open. They seem to open it when there are a lot of trucks going to and back from working on the water tank. There's a sign that says please walk your bike around the construction, but they didn't say anything as I rode by. They just waved.

Welcome to the forums. :) I have been up past the gate since the fires, but not all the way to the Observatory. The Mt. Hollywood side is untouched but I've been told that the side by the Greek theatre and over/up by the water tower is scorched and has zero shade now.

Hi me,
I came over here from RBR because Lola, eh... I mean you invited us over from RBR. BF is a much livelier group. I hope I can join some of the rides. I would love to meet new peeps.
I was over in the scorched area 2 weeks ago and it was eerie. It was desolate and quiet, barely heard a bird. One time I thought I heard what sounded like little paws running and I looked around and nothing was there..

Hi m.e.
I need to get a light for night ridin. I just have a blinky back light. But if you guys schedule one, I'll definitely have a light by then. That would be fascinating to see GP at night.

Has anyone ever gone up the restricted canyon roads in GP at night, alone? I haven't, but for a thousand bucks I would.

P.S. I'm not paying.

You are more than welcome. I'm not sure about next week, but maybe the MEN will gather (hint, hint, men). I'm assuming you are a woman? If so, just know that the crew who met for the night rides and are the sweetest guys and very much gentlemen. Of course, if I'm there, I'll introduce you. Look out for the Griffith Park Night Ride thread here soon. Also, a good light is needed. :)

I wouldn't do it. I think it's haunted in the scorched area. I rode so fast through there and it was late afternoon. If you go there by yourself at night, you'll come back like Moses did in the 10 commandments, with shocking white hair and a wild look in your eyes. Oh yeah I'm not paying you $1000 either.

Griffith Park is gorgeous and a wonderful place to ride, IMO. I can't wait to get back up in the canyons and, in fact, am headed up Friday morning very early. I'll let you know if there are any ghosts or goblins up there.

I went up to the observatory via tt hill Monday and the gate near the summit of tt hill is now opened. Mt hollywood is opened to the point where it comes to a fork in the road. There are still barriers at both entrances. I hopped the barrier and continued on Mt. Hollywood. I chickened out about jumping the barrier to the scorched area.
I'll wait for me's report on Friday.

i roded up the TT hill and around the gate going up to the heli-pad/new construction. i made it all the way to the top (where it starts to go down the always closed to traffic road that hooks up with the Los Feliz BLVD entrances roads) and ran into a ranger who told me it was misdemeanor trespassing (WHA?!) and i needed to turn back around (ie. back down the helipad road). i've also been testing my luck by riding past the closed gate from the Western/Los Feliz BLVD entrance, through the second closed gate, and onto the observatory parking lot. I've been turned back from that route once, too.
and let me just rant a minute, here, too: when I tried to leave the park through the main entrance at Riverside (where the pony rides are etc.) I was forced to ride first with no shoulder with traffic and then against oncoming traffic. Or get on the freeway. Instead I illegally cut onto the main one way exit road (where there sign said NO BIKES) and road that out of the park. There is nothing wrong with that exit road. Why is it closed?
If only I was riding a horse. I could go ANYWHERE in that park. (and my horse could POOP anywhere in that park).
this conludes my rambling GP post :)

Hmmm...yes, I've been up to the barricades but not past them. I'm going to try to get up to the observatory and then cut down Ferndell (I think that's the name) and back on Los Feliz or back up Ferndell. I'll report if anyone turns me back. As for the main road to Los Feliz (by the pony park) being closed, I was told that they are afraid of landslides which is the reason they've closed it, but I've hopped on it too and taken it down to Los Feliz. I refuse to ride without the shoulder and think that is more dangerous.
Nice rant by the way. :D

The Western/Los Feliz route has been completely clear all the way up to the observatory the last 3 or 4times I've been up that route in June and July.
Also, I've been past that barricade a few times but have yet to encounter a park ranger.

What time? I have a breakfast meeting at Marston's in Pas. at 7. I would be happy to ride with someone up there.
When I was in the scorched area, a ranger rode past me and didn't stop. Another watched me hop over the barricades on upper crystals springs, because I wined about how dangerous it is to ride with no shoulder. I think he wanted me to go away and shut up.:D Guess I've been lucky.

Might not work this time as I'll be up by 6 or so and over there by 7. But, seriously, lady, come out to play...um...I mean, ride. :D Especially on the night rides. You'll dig it, I can guarantee. ;)

I was just heading out there. They said it was 2 - 4 acres. It looked like it started near the observatory in the scorched area. I can see the smoke from my balcony and it's white, so maybe the fire is out. Now we probably won't be able to get up there for 6 weeks! I don't see why people can't be more careful.

Crystal springs was open (upper road, too) but one lane closed, which made for a nice wide bike lane.
I tried to ride through Los Feliz and up Commonwealth around the golf course. Everything was blocked off and a guard was stationed at the top of Commonwealth before heading over the gate.
I decided not to fight the power and went back down into Los Feliz and rode the bike path.

Beginning Saturday, Nov 3, the roads (Vermont & Western) leading up to the observatory will be open to all general traffic, like it was before. There will be no more shuttle busses to the observatory. They're reopening the main parking lot.

Mary, the climb up Ferndell should be open starting Nov 3. There's really no reason for them to restrict traffic on that road. Of course, I could be wrong.
