After feeling like I'd always have to deal with motorists being at least annoyed with my presence, at worst yelling and honking I've found a place to ride. Around Walled Lake there are bike lanes most of the way around the lake, and everyone is very nice to me. There are cyclist all over the place and even though the bike lanes are done poorly i.e. bike lane only in one direction, bushes blocking view of lane; all of the motorists are fine with waiting for a safe time to pass, or just cruising along at 20 or so.

My favorite spot is the I-15 frontage road from Banning near the top of San Gorgonio Pass down to the outskirts of Palm Springs in Southern California. 1% downgrade, almost no cars, and a 30 to 45 MPH tailwind.

There is a mile or so on the I-15 shoulder. It is legal. There is also an indian Casino at Cabazon as a rest stop. The return trip is best done by motor vehicle.
