Hey people -- spray painting my bike - how "roughed up " must the clear coat be to get paint to adhere well ? and is it possible to just tape everything off or do i need to take this puppy apart? Steel frame LOTS of clear coat -- Raleigh just had to put the stickers under the cc  this is my Rush Hour so though i want to "beater" it up i don't want to kill it -- just trying to save it from the rack crackers .

Oh yeah and while i'm asking......I've got this 91 Dale totally nekid of parts ( good time to paint it too) it's aluminum -- i heard better to hit it with a walnut style sanding.....true in you guys opinions ? i was told a hard sand could compromise the integrity of the frame -- did i get my chain yanked

400 grit wet sandpaper. Be sure to degrease before yousand and before you paint.

I use a 400 grit sanding sponge to rough it up. Then just clean/degrease really well.
