Surely many of you are familiar with the age-old problem of massive stinkage coming from sandals.

I've tried soap and laundry detergent and scrubbing and soaking and even bleach and whatnot, but that foot smell just seems so seeped in there.

Any particular products or methods you'd recommend?

Oh, and what about those treehugger-type things, the cork sandals? Does cork have better smell deterrent properties?

cheers

peroxcide. it kills all the bacteria that make 'em smell in the first place

What kind of sandals, Nic? I mean, are they leather, all synthetic, or what? (My answer depends on what they're made of.)

I burn mine. :D

(I sometimes soak my stanky Tevas in the sink with a bit of bleach in the water and that tends to work.)

This does make quite a difference, as does the least-offensive smelling Lysol spray you can find. (Rinse out the latter, though, otherwise it'll do not-nice things to the skin on your feet.

I usually just wear mine in the shower once every couple weeks, make sure to get some antibacterial soap worked into the soles.

Swimming pool. A quick dip in the chlorine water and set in the sun to dry.

Try the peroxide - it shouldn't hurt them. One time I put my brother's in a baking pan and let them sit in the sun with baking soda on them for a day, then washed them with ammonia, and that helped.

For routine maintenance, wash them at least once a month with ammonia in the wash water. If your feet tend towards the stinkier, perhaps go for twice a month. My bro is afflicted with the foot rot. :(

why in a baking pan?

I like to rub old, moldy cheese on my sandals to mask the smell.

I use a bleach solution and a toothbrush. Most Teva type sandals (I have nike acg's, very similiar) dead skin will get into the cracks and you wont be able to get that out just by soaking it. Gotta scrub!

Edit: This problem is also huge with some cheap birkenstock imitations. The pores on the material are so large that dead skin will get in there and rot and you cant EVER get it out. My roommate had a pair for two months before we both agreed they absolutly had to go.

It doesn't have to be a baking pan. I just don't like to get the baking soda all over the place, and my brother's sandals happened to fit. :)

After you destink them, try preventative medicine to keep it from happening again. Swimming pool dips help (thats what I did in FL), also I used "Gold Bond" foot spray, comes in a blue can. "Gold Bond" sounds like something old men use, but if it works to keep feet from smelling in FL tropical heat I am not going to argue with it! If they don't sell that stuff on your side of the Atlantic, I am sure they have some equivalent.

My method works 100% of the time - I give them to our people who clean our house and office. Magically (see - there is magic!) they are clean and odor free.

I have no idea what they do - and I probably don't want to know...

No, mine don't either. The trick is to like WASH and BATHE more than once a year. ;)

Mix a handful of tea tree oil drops with water in a spray bottle and each night give your sandles a spritz and they will not smell. The tea tree oil is a natural anti-bacterial agent. So you not only get fresh smelling sandals you also don't have to deal with noxious chemicals.

Now scientists call this disease bromidrosis
And well they should
Even Napoleon knows that
But us regular folks
Who might wear a tennis shoe
Or an occasional python boot
Know this exquisite little inconvenience by the name of:
Stink foot
