General Cycling Discussion - Would like a suggestion for a trailer.

I posted on the Recumbent forum with no luck. Anyhow, I have a BikeE recumbent and need a trailer to haul my 4 mo old daughter in. I don't want some thing cheaply made yet I don't want to spend $400 either. Heck, I really don't care to spend over $125 but will if that's what it takes. Any suggestions?

I should also note that I don't mind at all having to do some mods to make a trailer work with my BikeE.....especially if I can keep the costs down (don't have time to make my own however).

You should not put your baby in anything until she is older. Most recomend waiting till they are 1.

i started my daughter off at 8m months old. I use a trek transport deluxe and love it although it was in the 400$ range for a two child cart.

Trek does have others though and they have a single that sells for around 300.

mine is very light and it has wind/rain protection as well as mesh to keep bugs and debris out.

I bought a used Burley D lite and it works great. The problem with younger kids is it is really difficult to fit helmets to their heads (that being said anyone know where they sell helmets for' 1 yr olds?). I take my 11 month old and my 4 year old out for rides all the time, it is very similar to a mild hill workout (unless I am on a hill and then it becomes a major hill workout!).

These are the best made and saftest trailer out there. They come with many different attachements for hiking, skiing, biking etc. This is the best investment we have ever made our son just loves it. Don't skimp on some cheap trailer when you are carrying your kids. It's not worth taking the chance.

Most people recommend that the child should be able to hold their head up on their own before you start using the trailer for biking. This is usually about 6 months old sometimes a little more depending on the child.

You might want to troll ebay for trailers. I was able to find a good deal on a used trailer that is on the way now via UPS.

Burleys are well appreciated by US customers, Chariot by Canadians, and I think Trek carriers (sold in U.S.) are made by Chariot.

With your budget, I'd recommend you look for garage sales or even for retail outlets that might want to get rid of older models at the end of the rental season. That's how I got a little used 2000 Chariot 2-child carrier for less than half the price of a brand new 2002 carrier.

We have a Yakima Tot Rod trailer. Has been a great buy so far. We paid $250 for it. Easy to hook up and plenty of room to put some stuff in with the child.

Bike swaps are good too. I got my trailer at abike swap put on by a local club.

I have an Instep Quick'n'Easy. I don't think they are as good quality as Burleys or Trek but still very safe and nothing to compare to other cheap brand (don't really know why Instep deal with Target and the like..). See instep.net.
Look also for Bell Rambler, good model at less than $150.00, very close to Burleys.
Four months is a little young, I would wait till 8 or 9 months at least. Trailers are great.
