My wife and I will be coming there in January next year. 2 Questions. Number one.
Is there a decent place we can rent bikes for a week for pretty cheap. We don't need suspension bikes or anything, actually SS or fixies would be ideal. We don't want to rent a car for a week if we won't need one.
And number 2 I am gonna have a day to myself and want to do one of the down volcano rides, or something cooler if any locals have any suggestions. A bit of history of biking for me. I am a commuter during the week 12 miles round trip on a fixed gear. But I can hold my own 30-50 miles on a road bike ride. So any cool bike suggestions would be great. We will be there for a week so it could be cool to meet up with anyone who wants to that would be great. Looking forward to responses!

Was in Maui this spring. I rented from West Maui Cycles (in Lahaina), they were just ok. They seemed kind of put out to have to spend their time renting to me, and it wasn't particularly cheap. There's another place by the Airport, but I don't have any experience with them.
However, I did a pretty cool ride around the West Maui Mountains. Starting from Lahaina take the main hiway north and proceed all the way to Wailuku. From Wailuku head south past the Aquarium by Kihei and then loop back around North to Lahaina. It was about 65 miles and there were some good rolling hills on the north side of the Island. Lots of spectacular scenery on the North side of the Island (between Napili and Wailuku) which, by the way, has very little traffic.
Riding down Haleakala standing on my brakes just didn't appeal to me, although alot of people do it. There's another guy (retired pro) that will take you out on some back roads at a pretty good pace. It's a package deal that includes the bike, shoes, helmet, clothes etc...
There are a few other threads in the Forums here about cycling in Hawaii, you just have to do a search for them. My one suggestion is that if you ride for more than an hour or so, bring along some type of electrolyte replacement drink or product. Good luck.

Sorry for being so late into this thread, but have you tried Go Cycling Maui (http://www.gocyclingmaui.com)? In addition to renting out bikes & gear, they also conduct cycling tours around Maui. The neat thing is that you get treated as if you were part of a pro team out on a fully supported training ride, so not only do you experience the beauty of Maui, you also get to feel what it's like to be treated like if you were on a pro team. Each training ride is led by a leader, who acts as your guide. The ride is followed by a follow van, which is stocked with whatever you need. In that way, you don't have to carry extra bottles or energy bars on your bike; just simply drop back to the follow van and they'll have it ready for you, just like the pros! Get a flat on the ride? They'll have a wheel ready to switch out, then the van will pace you back up to the group.
We did two rides with them two years ago. We did the road to Hana on one day, had such a fantastic time, that I convinced my friends we had to ride with the group when they went up Haleakala the next day. We had a blast. Very well worth the money.
