For my SS, the 42 tooth ring is attached to only big ring, which is part of the crankset. I will not ever be using the big ring and want to remove it. Any ideas? I guess I could cut it off.

Grind it off, or smooth out the teeth and use it as a chain-guard to keep your pants from getting dirty or caught-up.

it sounds like you might have cottered cranks, do they look like these? if so, you will probly have to cut the ring off

i don't think cottered, i think it's just an old road crankset.
i know exactly what you're talking about. and no, you can't do anything about it...
besides getting a new crankset.
