Edit: I can't do this ride due to family 'stuff' that popped up yesterday. - sorry to the few that were interested, and I'll be bumping this thread when I'm able to make it happen.

So...I keep looking for rides happening this weekend, and sadly, I cannot do Indolent58's Cool Breeze Training century and soiree. Much as I'd like to...I just can't. There's nothing posted for Saturday, and I wasn't planning on riding with a group...but here's what I'm doing, and if anybody wants to show up, you are more than welcome.

This is a 59 +/- mile ride, with 90 Hors Categorie climbs and it'll be 2,000 degrees. <---the only truth is the mileage...I'm just covering my butt after getting lambasted for misrepresenting my last ride.

Start is the same as every start I seem to do - Behind the Macaroni Grill at the Westfield North County Fair off Via Rancho Parkway an the I-15.

The route:
The Mall, North on Bear Valley, Citrus, El Norte Parkway...North on Ash, Broadway, then Jesmond Dene. An easy ascent of Mt. Murder, down the Old 395 to Lawrence Welk...up then down 395 to the 76. Rest at the gas station there. East on the 76, South on Couser Canyon (little climbing here) to Lilac. East on Lilac to Valley Center. East on Woods Valley to Lake Wohlford. Down Lake Wohlford, then South on Bear Valley to the start.

Here's a Toporoute (http://www.toporoute.com/cgi-bin/getSavedRoute.cgi?routeKey=BOYDGPNSPCNKPKG).

Here's a Bikely Route Thing. (http://www.bikely.com/maps/bike-path/Ronde-de-Valley-Center)

There is exactly Zero miles of flat. It's either climbing descending...or little teeny rollers that Indolent would call mountains.

I would be thrilled to meet at 6 and start at 6:30 so as to be on Couser Canyon no later than 9-ish....depending, of course, on whether anybody wants to do this with me. I (most likely) won't be able to do lunch or anything...maybe a coke somewhere...we'll play it by ear.

Fiend! Toporoute crashes people's browsers. Use a civilized mapping tool like Bikely.

And you're wrong. The parking lot at the Macaroni Grill is pretty flat.

Toporoute has the handy follow route option so you don't need to click around each curve, it's very handy. I normally use toporoute to use that feature, then export the gpx and import it into bikely for commentary and such.

Just for you...I signed on to Bikely...I'll do up another routeslip soon.

Thank you, Ron...Suck it Dan.

So compared to yesterday's ride, will this one be more/much more difficult?

Mo'Phat
08-06-07, 03:43 PM
More difficult...but not much more than more. Much more sustained climbing, about 1/10th the stopsigns or signals, more heat.

Otherwise, it's just the same.

Dan, Too much clicking in Bikely...Once their technology gets to the 18th century and can follow the roads like toporoute can, I'll stick with Toporoute. I got to the switchbacks on Couser Canyon and gave up.

FAIL!

Couser Canyon can be brutal. Lilac is just long. Mt. Meadows (ie: Mt. Murder) is just plain mean.

I may be down for this one. Let me see if the wife wants to ride on Sunday instead of Saturday. And yes this route can get very hot and the climbing seems to never stop at times!

I'm out. I've just checked Dan's Sunday ride, and I think I'll need to save a little energy to finish that one.

I'm with Dan on Toporoute. It crashes my browser. Though Bikely isn't much better. Cycling web apps hate Macs. Which is why I'm stuck with gmap-pedometer :(

Misrepresentation is part of the fun of organizing the ride. You get to either have fun backpedaling or calling people wusses.

I'm most likely out. I'll probably ride solo as I haven't really done that in awhile.

I remember most of that route from a 300K Brevet in 1989. Only we started in Riverside and rode down to that area and back. Nice scenery including a basket full of kittens for adoption south of Hemet.

Patrick: If it's just you and me, I might skip the whole "meet at the mall thing" and I can just meet you at Lawrence Welk or something...do the loop through Valley Center, then I'd head home as you head back up through Jesmond Dene.

I'll know better as it gets closer.

If that ends up being the case, you should trek up to our ride in the Angeles Forest. I know it's a hike, though (I keep meaning to come down and do Palomar with you guys, but never follow through).

Hay...I'm out. Family obligations have popped up, and I can't do this...I'll leave the route up in case anybody wants to do it for whatever reason.

Patrick: I'll definitely just put a rain check on this ride, and we'll do it soon.

Igoyippie4skippy: Have a great ride! I love that area.

VanceMac: I need to do Angeles Crest soon...real soon...but (as I'm sure is the case with you) finding the extra 4 hours to make the round-trip drive is challenging.

Paul, I did this route with Chucklehead yesterday, and seeing as it is right in my backyard its no biggie. Hopefully you have better luck with your next ride :)
