This past weekend, myself, Travis, Lara, Karen, Mark, Cyn, Paul, Martin and Haeran descended upon Panguitch Utah. We met up with Gene (justme). We arrived in town Friday night and met down at the KOA campgrounds to hook up with some Utah friends........Lucy and her crew from Hurricane....to BBQ. We made some new friends and enjoyed the cool evening. Then it started to get a little too cold for my liking. Next thing you know a few drops of rain and then a quick 30 minute shower. I was afraid that it might continue on til the next morning and ruin the ride but NOPE perfect weather. We also hooked up with a couple ( marty and kelly ) from N. California that we met at the 3 harbors tour, so we had a good size group rollin.
Our newly formed group immediately began to downsize thanks to Travis, Mark and the Tandem duo = Martin and Haeran who jumped out the gate with speed. Not sure what happened to our leisurely decided pace to take pictures and enjoy the scenery - Gene stayed back with Karen, lucy and the other pink ladies outta Utah. I heard they were buggin the poor man the entire ride. He was their token male. This ride jumped off the street onto an uphill bike path. I began to fall off at this early point ( mile 10 ) not sure if it was the altitude or just being a pathetic rider. Anyhow they were blazing up ahead......Marty and Kelly fell off. Once I cleared out the ole nasal pockets I was back. We regrouped at the top and rounded up our crew. Once again the pack took off. I was feeling good at this point and noticed I no longer saw Gene, Karen and the pink ladies behind us. I slowed a little to look back and when I turned around - Mark, Travis and Cyn were a faint shadow up ahead. Luckily for us they had a mechanical so we blew right past them :p but just to mile 26 - the rest stop. We flicked it up a bit and waited around for Gene and pink ladies but they needed more time so we decided to go. Travis told me to go ahead and start riding and he and Mark would catch up. Well I jumped on the tandem train and rolled. I turned around and Paul had fallen off and the rest of the crew was no where in sight. The tandem wasn't slowing down so neither was I - Martin and Harean would look back often to make sure I was still hanging on and I was but barely. I kept checking back but no sign of my husband and crew. However I knew it wouldn't last long. We continued hauling as we were passed by a motorhome and coming off the back of the motorhomes' draft was Travis and Cyn and little Lara hanging off the back. They drafted the RV and chased us down for 13 miles averaging about 26/27 :D. Holy smokes they were moving. Then here comes Mark going so dang fast he almost blew past us  he had stopped to clear mud from his cleats when Travis and the crew jumped in the slipstream of the RV. So he had to fight the wind alone and catch us. With the caravan back together we rolled through some beautiful scenery surrounding Bryce Canyon. There was a mile or 2 stretch that was covered in lose gravel from the previous rains and wind. But we navigated it okay without any incident. Next rest stop was around mile 60.....we enjoyed the Cokes and Mountain Dews along with all the other good stuff and rolled again. This time the tandem was moving too fast for ME. I'm pretty sure the rest of the crew could hang but this lady can't roll at those speeds for an entire ride. We met up with them again at mile 80 our last rest stop and Martin proclaimed that he was feeling GREAT and was full of energy - his wife Haeran however was looking at that seat with dismay - she really didn't want to mount it again. But they made their pact and jumped back on and took off and joined 2 more tandems....there was no way in this world I could keep up. We were waiting around for Mark and decided we would start slow and he would catch up.........Bad idea......he was in the bathroom and when he came out and saw that we were gone he had to play serious catch up. The head winds along Hwy 89 had picked up significantly and he had to fight it alone again. BUT he caught up again and blew past us....Cyn had to go and reel him back in. He forgave us for taking off but him and Cyn were itching to race. Travis on the other hand secretly wanted in the competition and I told him to go ahead I would be cool with Lara but he vowed to stay with us. Thanks Honey. Lara has turned into a little speed demon. When we reached mile 97 of 107 Mark and Cyn couldn't resist the jabs they were taking at one another over racing to the finish..........they took off. FINALLY We rolled into the finish at 5:30 bike time and 6:30 ride time.....We ate lunch, showered, chatted it up and waited around for our friends to come in. Not sure of their time - Karen and the pink ladies rolled in w/o Gene. I asked Karen where he was and she said she felt really bad because he had pulled them through the wind most of the ride and then around the last 20 miles he fell off. I secretly think he had enough of the female jibber jabber and fell off purposely. :D So my and husband and I were going to drive back and see if we could find him but luckily I checked with the driving support and once I described Gene I was told "he's doing fine, he's should be here in a few minutes." YIPPEE...I went to the front of the fairgrounds to get his photo finish.

Great pics, Asia. Looks like you all had a great time. Arm warmers in the morning, how was the weather later? High elevation?

The weather ended up in the 80's. The warmers came off at mile 26 however I could have gone without them. The elevation tops off around 8500 feet.

Looking at the size of you and Travis' legs, sure don't look like it. What you been ordering there - salad?

Travis is the lucky one.......his food virtually disappears, mine, well it stays with me for a minute.
Not to mention you know the order: salad, ribeye, baked potato and a coke.

What a absolute fun trip and GREAT ride!! The pic of Travis and Mark (Hollywood) spinning up ahead is EXACTLY what the ladies were staring at for much of the ride! I even had to put several cyclists in their place that were trying to cut in and suck some of that speed...just smiled and told 'em...I own that wheel!! Seriously, those bad boyz deserve some shorts that say 'Draft This' on the buttocks! Can hardly wait for the next ride!! Thanks again for all the work organizing this fine trip...we were definitely spinning happy!

Looks like a fun ride, but no side-trip to Gooseberry Mesa?

Dunno if you knew, but right outside of Hurricane, up on Gooseberry Mesa, are some really awesome mtn. bike trails. Twisty singletrack, slickrock, very Moab-esque.

Done riding/camping trips there a few times, though I've not been in a few years.

Highly recommended.

Thanks for writing such a great ride report, Asia. It really was a fun day with a lot of laughs and perfect riding conditions. Tell Travis I said "thanks" for the extra shove he gave me on the downhill so I could catch up with you speedsters! It was all I could do to hang on to either yours or Cyn's wheel all day . . . dang - you chickies are F-A-S-T.

Karen rode really great, too, along with her "labial fatigue" crew. Poor Gene, though. They buttered him up the entire ride and then dropped him at the end. Maybe it was when they started saying "labial" that he decided he better back off. :p

Here's some more pics . . .

We should really get a moderator to copy this one over to the mountain-plains section. It belongs there, too.

I wanted to do this one. My grandmother's old house is in Circleville so I know the area very well. But this would be really hilly for a first century, so I opted for doing ULCER instead. This looks awesome though, and I will be there next year for sure. I hope to see you all there.

If I remember right that climb you're talking about at the beginning, that would be Red Canyon. Dude that's crazy stuff. I'll bet the climb to Panguitch Lake at the end was even worse though. I can't remember the elevation, but I know it's really really high. It's not uncommon to have freak snowstorms there in the summer. We used to fish there early in the morning and freeze our butts off.

Hopefully I'll be in the shape it takes to finish this one next year. Wish me look at Ulcer this week.

Thanks again.

Great pics, Asia. Yeah, I can vouch from personal experience how much of a speed demon Lara is ... I'm still trying to recover from Giro, and that was 1 month ago!

Uh oh. . . . . Don't put me in the middle of that one lady. Talk about being fraught with potential for trouble no matter what you do or don't say.

Besides, Lucy, Karen, and everyone else left me behind from the get go out of Circleville so I have to disavow any knowledge of this "labial fatigue" condition refered to. Glad someone looked it up to get it right.

Great ride everyone. Rumor has it that the southern loop up to Panguitch Lake and down through Mammoth Creek is going to be the century route next year, and that the double century will finish with the northern loop. :D

Thanx to everyone for waiting around for just me. I can hear Travis, who, along with Mark, took off out of the gate pacing the Sheriff's car down main street, and who probably arrived at the turn off to the bike path in Red's Canyon right along with the Sheriff, saying "What the H*** are we waiting for?" :D:lol::lol:
