Bikeforums.net is a forum about nothing but bikes. Our community can help you find information about hard-to-find and localized information like bicycle tours, specialties like where in your area to have your recumbent bike serviced, or what are the best bicycle tires and seats for the activities you use your bike for.

My father has an old Fiorelli ten-speed that he bought in the 70's when he was a kid. It's been sitting in the basement in pretty sorry shape for the last ten tears, so I thought I would fix it up for him as a summer project. Well, that summer project is now my fall project. So it goes.

I would like to have the frame repainted, but I don't really know who to go to. It has nice intricate chromed lugs, and chromed stays and dropouts, all of which I'd like to keep. I'd also like to have the decals reproduced, if possible. I'd have an auto shop or somehing repaint it if I didn't care about the detail, but I do, so I won't. Has anyone had experience with a company that does this kind of work? I've already looked into CyclArt, but I'm wondering what my other options are.

Also, any recomendations on componentry? It came with Simplex parts (read: cheap), and I'd like to build it up with something a little classier, like Campagnolo. How easy/difficult are old Campy parts to find? Where would I look?

I'll probably have more questions as the project moves along, but this seemed like a good place to start.

How bad is the original paint job? Unless it's totally shot, any repaint job will reduce the potential collectiblity of the frame. If you do go for a repaint, then splurge on something high-quality, durable, and authentic-looking. I am biased, because I sometimes go on Vintage Bicycle Association rides with Jim and Susan Cunningham, but CyclArt does first-class work on paint and decals.

You can find old Campy parts all over eBay. I like the early 1980s NR components, but you can mix and match almost everything if you avoid the modern indexed shifting fad. I also like many of the late 1970s and early 1980s SunTour and Sugino components, if you don't mind mixing continents in your project.

Susan Cunningham is one of the rudest people I've ever swapped emails with. Don't even bother! There are a ton of great painters out there - nealy all of which charge a good deal less and can wonderful work than this mob.

I think you can reasonably expect a civil and courteous tone when you're being asked for the most money of any painter in the industry.....
