I have been contemplating my wheel situation for a couple months now. Its too expensive for me to get my wheels built by my lbs and i am leary of some of the ebay stores. Nashbar is selling a velocity spartacus wheelset, silver deep v's and velocity hubs, for 199.99 the lacing is 20 front 24 rear. I am not a heavy guy 145lb so this doesn't bother me too much but it is a "road" wheelset meaning i would still have to get a rear fixed hub. Nashbar sells one of these for 24.99. Can I lace a 32 hole hub to a 24 hole rim? If so I am probabky going to pull the trigger because there are always nashbar freeshipping and 10-20% off coupons that could make this a really good deal. Let me know about the mismatching hub and rim thing though.

I don't think it's worth the $224 or $200 or possibly $180 something and then still have to switch the rear hub. ... and end up with a rim with more holes in it than the hub. just not right at all. why not just order an IRO wheelset? they're beautiful in every way.
and then you can ask yourself: Is this possible to swap the thread of a flip-flop in a Formula hub with the one of another one?
you know... just take the thread from my present wheels and put it there.
see this thread for reference.http://www.bikeforums.net/showthread.php?t=329843

What are the IRO wheelset components? I am interested in the rim specs. How deep? Also, I need to know what the down sides to lacing a mismatched hub and rim are. And as far as that other thread, I don't even really know what to say about a question like that.

Buy those. $120 for formula hubs with decent rims.

Are you talking about the dp-18 weinmann ones? They are like 5 1/2 pounds i would be adding weight to my bike.

IRO wheels are formula hubs (same as velocity) laced to Velocity fusion rims. handbuilt by velocity.
My IRO wheels came shipped in a velocity box with a velocity builder/date sticker.
The fusion rims are not as deep as a deep v, but also lighter by 45g each rim.

thank you jayrooney. this is cheaper and nicer. Also I used to be set on a set of white deep v's but i am thinking silver is a solid classic bet.

My bike shop has no problem ordering the Formula/Deep V combo for $200 in black or silver. They looked this up in their catalog, which I would assume is distributed to many other shops. And other catalogs are probably similar too, so give it a shop.
