For Sale - Nice messenger bags. <officially sold out!>

Bikeforums.net is a forum about nothing but bikes. Our community can help you find information about hard-to-find and localized information like bicycle tours, specialties like where in your area to have your recumbent bike serviced, or what are the best bicycle tires and seats for the activities you use your bike for.
Both sizes are now sold out. Thanks again to everyone who bought one!.
This bag is much nicer than your standard Timbuk2 type bag and cheaper to boot. The padding on the main strap is far superior to the timbuk2, but the straps themselves are a bit less substantial. It has all the features you would expect a quality mess bag to have including easy to adjust straps, weather proof denier nylon, stash pocket, and an interior zippered pocket and pouch. As you can see in the pictures, the large bag is big enough for a two year old or two cases of PBR for whichever stage in life you find yourself in. The small would be great for everyday items but would probably not be adequate for school unless your major is one of the ones that has pamphlets for text books. :) It really fills up quickly and is not very comfortable when full. The large on the other had can be stuffed to the gills and it still works well. When in doubt, get a large. In general though, both are a comfy bags for the money you can't go wrong.
Here are the dimensions:
Small- 19x12.5x5
Large- 24x15x7
The brand is "the backside". They make tents and sleeping bags and stuff too. There's nothing on their website about this particular bag, but they do have some backpacks. www.thebackside.com According to the tag on the bag, they come with a warranty against material and workmanship defects.
UPDATE: I'm getting a TON of PMs on these bags, so to cut down on that a bit, I'm going to be posting updates on shipping status and current stock of bags. I'm also going to include my pay pal address: skanknride AT hotmail DOT com. If you want a bag and my last post says I have one you'll probably be OK to just send the money. If I oversell and can't get more, I'll refund your payment. If you want to be safe, just send a PM.
LARGE BAGS: $60
SMALL BAGS: $40
SHIPPING either size in the US: $10
SHIPPING to Canada: $15

really cool looking bag,
how does it feel carrying that heavy of a load in it for any amount of time?
Would it be comfortable carrying the 2 cases of beer the 3 or 4 miles to a buddies place?

I would say 2 cases of beer for three miles would be no problemo. It won't be as nice as a higher end bag, but it will do the trick.
I carried 9 other bags in it for 10 miles and it was OK . It was so full I couldn't close the flap all the way and quite heavy. I won't say it was like it wasn't there, but it was doable. I had a little trouble adjusting the main strap while riding with it so full, but the load was manageable.

How tall's your model (wife?)? I can't picture how big these things are, but that small looks HUGE on her.

Haha, yeah she's little. She's 5'2", 110 lbs soaking wet with rocks in her pockets.

I'm wondering if the strap can be used on either shoulder or if you have ones made to be used on the right shoulder.
Sorry, left only. There's no way to switch the strap, you'd just have to get used to wearing it how it's made.
Questions for you Kemmer:
With the small, would you be able to fit a pair of sneakers, and a shirt/shorts? And possible a few snacks.

Yeah, the small is perfect for normal everyday type things. I haven't used my large much the the small one is usually be enough. The only time I have used the large since I bought it was to pick up more bags and take packages to the post office. For my everyday type stuff the small has been plenty.

i just got mine in the mail. its pretty awesome, almost exactly like chrome it even has the secret pocket in the same place.
Thanks for the review kirk!
I'm having a little trouble keeping up, I think I've sold/traded more than 30 of these bags. I'm going to be updating status of bags here since I don't have time to PM everyone individually.
Shipping Status:
Everyone who paid for a bag (and the payment had cleared) on or before the 12th has a bag in the mail. Most of them went out on Tuesday night but I clogged up the package drop thingy and had to send a few out the next afternoon. Anyhow, if you're in the US and you payment had cleared by the 12th you should see your bag by Monday.
For everyone else, I'm going to try and get the rest out tonight. Thanks!

I just received my Small this morning and did a grocery run with it in the afternoon. The Small is a very nice size for everyday use. No issues with the straps as yet, works fine, webbing's ok and the bag is well made, balance well loaded. I also happen to like the toned down color, black. And oh yes, I finally found the "secret compartment"!
Short version :
Yes good.
I like.
Thanks Kemmer for a great deal!
Thanks jebejava, I'm glad everyone seems to be really happy with the bags!
Stock update
I picked up 10 more bags today, so I should have plenty for a while. If you have any questions feel free to ask. Otherwise, my pay pal is in the first post! Thanks!

Now some detail shots of the bag, with a pen for size comparison.
This zipper makes the bag look small in the photos, but is actually the larger kind, used for camping stuff.
Lock pocket.
Bottle pocket!!! There are two.
Seperable liner.
I was happily surprised by the size of the bag, I thought it might end up too small for me. The construction of the bag seems excellent, though the webbing is a little on the sad side. If it touches the velcro it will snag, which worries me that it will wear down over time. Overall: a steal for $40.
is there a laptop area?
Sorry, no laptop sleeve.

Is the "large" size the same as the Chrome Metropolis? About how many cubic inches is it?
Is the "large" size the same as the Chrome Metropolis? About how many cubic inches is it?
It's almost exactly the same size as my metropolis. Multiplying my measurements gives me 2520 cubic inches, but I don't know how accurate that is. Hope that helps!
just got mine today (canada)
exactly what i needed, a real steal at 40$

Ditto. My next bag needs to be switchable. Still those look nice for 40 bucks. And nice pictures Kemmer. The one with the girl in the back made me LOL.
Sorry, not switchable. :(
Hey I'm interested in these. I know you mentioned the Large compares to the Metropolis, but does the Small compare to the Mini-metro? or Citizen? I have the Citizen right now and it'd be great to have a point of reference. Thanks!

kemmer, out of curiosity, what shipping service do the bags go out with?
USPS priority. It takes two days once I manage to get them to the post office. Right now it's taking about 5 days to get them out.

Bag report -
I've been using my "KemmerBag" for about a week and a half now and have been very happy with it. What a great deal! The heaviest load hauled was somewhere over 10lbs. of groceries, and that was when I thought of a modification to the stabilizer strap.
My sewing skills are nonexistent and my terminology might be wrong, but I thought of a "foldover" fastened with velcro and with a buckle so the stabilizer strap can be attached to a different, movable position on the main strap. The attachment point would then end up somewhat in the middle of my chest instead of just around my left shoulder. I think this "foldover" should have a stiffener inside so it doesn't easily cinch the soft main strap.
Would any BF member be willing to make something like this for me? I've attached a drawing and the part to be made is circled in green. If there is another section of the forum that is more appropriate to post this, let me know. This is also the first time I've attached an image file, so I hope it is of reasonable size!

It would be cool if you could make it a cel phone holster as well.

I used the "secret compartment" for that. Seemed like a perfect place for a cell, but there's something about the velcro closure in that position that I don't have 100% faith in. Perhaps the addition of a snap button strap and a safety lanyard hook? I think I could very easily drop a phone from there. If I had the tools and could sew, there's a whole bunch of bag mods to spawn!

On the prototype bag I worked with Dan from Seagull on, the sternum strap is mounted like this. However, it doesn't work too well because it always slides around. It might be possible to use the velcro to hold it in place, but velcro wears out quickly.

Blickblocks, glad you posted your experience. I have considered that the "foldover" will slide around and had made a quick paper mock-up of that part, but should make a better mock-up of cardboard or stiff plastic. I think that if that part is adequately stiff and sized correctly, it will slide up against the large main buckle and could stay in position. That will give an approximately 4" difference in buckle location, depending on the construction of the "foldover" and where the main buckle stops its slide. Of course it's theory at this point before prototyping. Did you have that part in a soft or hard material?
I talked to a friend of mine earlier today and she will try a prototype of canvas or whatever she has around. The foldover will have three panels, each panel left as an open pocket so we can slide in or remove a stiffening panel cut out of milk jug plastic. What we have to figure out is where to find the matching and size compatible receiver part of the buckle. It would be good if we can find a matching YKK buckle set. Some other buckles on straps I have around are incompatible because of prong configuration or slight differences in thickness and width. The last resort is to pilfer a receiver from one of the straps at the bottom front of the bag, but I'd hate to do that for prototyping.

Just curious... but I wonder is large or small better if I need to carry a laptop with a 15.4" (diag) screen? I would be planning to carry college stuff like laptop and binders. Thanks!

I would go with a large. I'm guessing your laptop would fit in the small bag, but it would be tight. The large will leave you some room for a fair amount of other random junk.
got my small and have to say i'm more than pleased. the thing is really comfortable to wear and when im riding it distributes the load more evenly across my back and doesnt kill 2 specific points on my shoulders like a backpack does.
more than enough room for everything I need to carry and I can't see anything on it wearing out/deteriorating under normal use.
good deal.

Hmmm, I hate to be a drag,
but these bags look exactly like Chrome bags. I know the cycling industry is a "jump on the bandwagon" industry, but it would be nice to see a slight innovation from the chromes. this just seems to be a copy it and use some slightly cheaper materials and sell it cheaper kind of thing.
At least chrome had their own ideas and inovations, and the seat buckles are cool.
Perhaps the reason the backside company doesn't have anything posted on their website, is because these are almost complete knockoffs of chrome (other than a logo) and they don't want to just look like copycats.
Please tell me i'm wrong.

Whilst I can't say anything to either confirm or deny your above statements, I will say the following:
I got bills to pay, me to feed, and packages that need carrying. Whilst I'd love to support innovation [like when my friends all started jacking seatbelts and buckles from school busses to sew em together and hold up their pants], I have a much more realistic thing to support: myself. Not everyone can afford to spring for a Chrome.
See a need, fill a need, is all I'm saying.
$40 ftw!

$65 (with shipping to CanadaLand) is a DAAAAAANG fine price for a bag like this. It leaves me money to fill the bag with icy cold beers, a whole bunch of times over.
currently my mess bag collection has: the original orange Ortlieb courier pack (100% PVC, no fabric sides), one medium waxed canvas Timuk2, one Kemmerbag. Missing from the collection is my waxed canvas Timbuk2 metro (stolen), my other Metro (cordura) also stolen and my Flying Roach pack and messenger bag (both stolen in the break in.)

i wonder what everyone thinks about carrying this back around if you're not riding a bike? I just got a bike and would like a bag to use while i'm on it, but i would like a bag that won't make me look like a doofus if i don't happen to be riding the bike. i'm thinking of the large to carry my 17" laptop....

Yeah, I get the payin the bills thing.
But here's an anology. I lived in Milwaukee for a while. A local cofee shop hired had an art student design a mural for the side of his store. Then he paid someone else to paint it for half the price. Or at least this is the way I heard the story. Now, none of the Messenger bag carrying, mocha drinkin, vegan, art students will go to the coffee shop. But I bet if they found out about your bags, they'd buy one. It just seems hypocritical to the messenger, and urban cyclist life-style to buy a knock-off bag.
I'm not saying you're a vegan, I wouldn't call anyone that without facts first, it's a pretty harsh thing to call somebody.
