I'm in the process of moving there right now -- should get there Tuesday night. Going to need a bike shop that's pretty close by that I can pick up some stuff -- threadless stem, front wheel (nothing fancy), and possibly a set of bullhorns.

Also, new to the area, so if anyone's up for showing me around, PM me!

Thanks!

I used to live in Shady Grove RV park on Barton Springs Rd just down from Zilker Park. There are many good bicycle shops in Austin. You might stop first at Bicycle Sport Shop on South Lamar just south of Barton Springs Rd on the left as you are headed south, after McDonalds on the corner, next to a music shop.

+1 on Bicycle Sport Shop. A really good LBS. There`s also a new Performance Bike on down South Lamar on the left just past Manchaca. Welcome to Austin!

If you don't mind coming up the road a little bit, The Peddler on North Loop is a great shop and stocks tons of fixed stuff. My favorite shop in town.

i'd say a big -1 for bicycle sport shop, because it's basically a big-box store for bikes that caters primarily to roadie ******bags (that is, roadies that are also ******bags. not all roadies are ******bags.). the peddler is cool, and closer to campus there's freewheeling bicycles (http://www.freewheelingbicycles.com), austin bikes (http://www.austinbikes.com), and clown dog bikes (http://www.clowndogbikes.net/).

most of the people who work at sweat shop are pretty cool, especially back in the mechanic dept, but ya; the store itself is run w/a pretty corporate mentality. it's also probably the closest to you unless you count austin tricyclist and/or jack & adam's, which i don't. for your stated needs, i'd recommend austin bikes, the peddler, or east side pedal pushers.

and a heads up to all austin folk: it's been too long, a messenger race is in the works. details to come soon...
