what do you think?
for the most part, it gets rave reviews. i guess that, after only a handful of listens, i'm not totally on board yet.
musically, i love it. high energy. they are tight as all get out. in that respect, this is one of their better albums since awake.
lyrically/vocally, i'm more than just a bit turned off by the "modern" sound.
from the first time i listened to it, this nagging thought kept jumping out at me....."is this album a direct reaction to the general fans' response to octavarium?" people accused them of being too pink floyd-ish on that album. other than the cheesy ballad that sounds like a lullaby and the 9/11 song, i really liked octavarium. unfortunately, dt caught holy hell for it.
if this cd is an offering to the dissapointed fans, that BLOWS! i hate it when bands appear to put out music that will sell vs. following their natural growth, etc.
if this album is truly the next phase of the band artistically, then, that's great. i'm just not into the metallica black album vocal stylings. and mike portnoy's backing vocals annoy me.
on another note, i miss kevin moore on keys. no offense to jordan rudess. jordan is one of the best rock keyboardists ever. he is a true virtuoso. with that much talent, how can a band not showcase it? ....and when they do, it takes away from the music for me. i much prefer kevin moore's mood-setting keys.
anyway, i'm going to see them this friday. woo hoo!
