i recently bought a schwinn that has been converted to single speed, with the old crankset and cassette intact. i plan on replacing the wheels anyway, so i'm not worried about that, but do i have to buy a new crankset? there are only 2 sprockets in the front, and it looks like i wouldn't need much of a spacer to put a single sprocket in. would this work or should i buy a bmx crankset like bulletproof or whatever? (i'm cheap)
sorry if this thread has already been made a million times before

just get some spacers or some bmx chainring bolts and ride.

Some cheapo cranksets you cannot take the big ring off. I converted one such bike. You can leave it as is, run the chain on the inside ring and get the correct sprocket to get your desired gear ratio. It's not as cool, certainly weighs more, but it's cheap and easy.
