So are we still doing this ride or is it canceled in favor of the labor day ride (which I can't do) ?

I can meet you guys on 8/25 at the start of the ride deliver jerseys. I just won't be riding (unless someone else has a trailer and can haul two kids up Diablo :D jk).
you can collectively pull the trailer up. like a stage coach. that'd be awesome. well, no not really, but it would make a great picture.

Let's do both!
BlastRadius, I live in Half Moon Bay. I can pick up the jerseys from you to take to the Diablo ride. That'll save you a drive, unless you want to take a drive with the kids anyway... Let me know if you want me to do that.
BigBossMan, why don't you go ahead and set the time and place to meet for Diablo. I'm in for sure.
We'll let Spingineer continue to shepherd the Labor Day ride. He has a thread going on that topic anyway.

That'd be great. Who'll be wanting to pick up jerseys on the 8/25 Diablo Ride?
Do we have a final location for the 8/25 Mt.Diablo ride? Does 8am work?

Sorry guys, I can't make it to the 8/25 ride :( I have to help run a belt test at our karate school. See you at the labor day ride.

I probably won't be doing the 8/25 Diablo ride unless the weather is cool. I really fade in the heat. I can't seem to hydrate enough to ward off heat exhaustion. If the ride location changes to near the coast, count me in!

I think we are going to meet at 'The Athenian School' (to be confirmed) and I believe BlastRadius will only show up to hand out jerseys (not to ride).

We're waiting for Bigbossman to confirm (he's on a trip this weekend), but between 8:30 and 9am at the Athenian school sounds fine to me. We can probably make it up to the top before it gets too hot.
The latest plan is for me to pick up the jerseys from Blast and bring it to the ride. This would save him a big drive.

I'm bumping this thread back up. Haven't heard from Bigbossman yet, but I want to set the time and meeting place so everyone can make plans for this Saturday.
Let's meet at 8:30am at the Athenian School, 2100 Mount Diablo Scenic Blvd Danville, CA. Here are the directions. I'd like to start riding before 8:40, so we can avoid the worst of the heat.
http://maps.yahoo.com/maps_result?&addr=2100+Mount+Diablo+Scenic+Bou&csz=Danville,+CA&country=us
The school is at the base of Mt. Diablo, and we'll go straight up. It's 10.8 miles, 3200+ft climbing at roughly 6% grade. There's water at the top. The weather forecast is for sunny skies and a high of 92 (could be worse:eek:). If some people want more riding in, we can always add something after the descent.
JERSEY PICKUPS: I'll be delivering NorCal jerseys from BlastRadius, so please let BlastRadius know if you want me to bring yours.
Look forward to a nice day with all the riders. And for those who are not riding, we'll be sure to post a detailed ride report!
Sounds good. I just started fighting a cold but I should be okay by Saturday.
Are there any flat roads nearby to warm up before the climb?

I hope your not getting the same cold virus I have, I'm totally out of commission with fever and bronchitis. I fought it for a week and it finally caught me. I'm going to try to ride Diablo anyway, I haven't climbed that mountain in over 20 years, so I'm looking forward to doing it with the Bf group.

You can ride Mt. Diablo rd. from Danville, it's only a couple of miles.
There's a roller section between the school and the start of the climb. It has very bad pavement at one point preventing any speedy start. Then the start of the climb is quite mild, perfect for warming up.

Er, I don't mean to be rude, but what part of "the start of the climb" are we talking about here? Every time I've gone up Diablo's southside, the early part of the climb has always been the hardest stretch until shortly before the Junction. Of course, for this Clydesdale, there is no easy stretch of the climb, before or after the Junction - especially after the Junction.:(

Right now, the forecast looks like a pretty cool day on Saturday! The forecast says it'll only be 81 degrees at noon time Saturday. http://cyclingweather.alptown.com/ We should be done by then! See you all at 8:30!

I'm back from vacation..... :(
The Athenian School sounds great, as does 8:30am.
Water is not a problem going up the mountain. You can fill at the park entrance 3.5 miles up, again at The Junction Ranger Station, and again at the top. In addition, pretty much any campground/day use area in between has piped water available.
Bring your Endurolites!!

anyone going from the san jose area?
I couldn't get any of my friends to come on this ride so I don't think I can make it up to Diablo. Are there anyone else in San Jose or passing by San Jose? I'd be happy to chip in for gas. Or a round of cold beer after the ride.
I am so on the fence on this one. I just started riding 4 months ago and have never participated in any kind of organized ride and, based on backinthesaddle's response to brsboarder, this definitely isn't the place to try out the climbing legs for the first time. Realistically, I wasn't planning on tackling Mt. Diablo until next year. But it's so close to home and it would be nice to meet some of the folks here on bf. Anybody else in the same boat as me? Or, am I just being paranoid?

There's only one way to find out if you can tackle this hill or not ;).
BTW, there will be no shame in turning around partway. No hazing allowed for people who make the effort and take the risk :).
Alrighty! With the relatively cool weather forecast, I think I'll give it a go. I'm just hoping I don't conk out and, if still clipped in, tip over http://mail.yimg.com/us.yimg.com/i/mesg/tsmileys2/11.gif.

All this talk not making it has my thinking I'm riding with the right group.... Unless you're all sand baggers.
I haven't been to the top since the 80's. Yikes.
And i won't even have my jersey yet. I'm still hoping you'll let me start with ya'all.

There will be some spider monkey's that scamper up the hill on their doubles while breezily chatting up a storm over the handlebars, and then there will be others (me, fer instance) that will slowly grind it out in our triples with nary a breath to spare.
But the descent is a different story. :D Here's a link to my 2006 New Year's Day descent - or at least the first 5 minutes from the top to the Juniper turnout:

Like I said, I just started biking in April and only getting in around 75 miles/week on average. I have shed around 20+ lbs thus far and could stand to lose a lot more. I've checked out your blog and amazed by your health/weight achievements. So, nope... no sandbagger here.

MY PLAN B: Throw a Bungee Cord (“rodeo" style) to hook it up to your bike :p
I wish I already had my NorCal Jersey (coming on the first re-order), but I'll celebrate anyway :D

OK, so Saturday at 8:30 at the Athenian School. But is that in the parking lot, or the road or what? As in where at the Athenian School.
I'll be in a California jersey (my NorCal jersey is in order 2 and not here yet...)
Who/what/how should I be looking for?

Parking lot. There is only one, adjacent to the road. If you find two old fat guys, that'd be me and Rich. :)
Google reports directions to The Athenian School HERE (http://www.athenian.org/about/directions.php).
I'm assuming in the parking lot. At least that's where I'll be. I can always move it onto the street if there are any signs that say otherwise. I'll be in a tan colored Toyota 4Runner. I won't have a Norcal jersey either as, like you, I'm in the "reorder" group. Who to look for... you might be able to find some pics in the "folks of norcal" (http://www.bikeforums.net/showthread.php?p=5099812#post5099812) thread.
