We are in the Chicago area and there has been many cases of people being bit by Brown Recluse spiders. Recently we have notice all the common white spiders have disappeared and this brown/tan/red spider has moved in. I'm seeing tons of them, and nothing else.

Can anyone identify this spider? Sorry for the poor pic, but I'm deathly afraid of these little buggers.

Looks like the Brown Recluse has longer, skinnier legs. (from Google search)

Looks like a common house spider, as far as I can tell from that image.

Agreed it doesn't look like a recluse.

Don't be afraid to get bitten. You just might end up with wicked awesome spidey powers.

Just think of the commute time savings when you can sling a web from building to building!!!

They have slightly different color schema's based off the breeds, but the legs look closer to correct as compared to the Hobo spider Cypress posted.

Looks like a house spider to me, like the one I found in my room earlier this year.

It's really easy to tell if it's a brown recluse spider. They only have 6 eyes, so get up close and count them.

Otherwise, they have a distinctive darker fiddle shape on their back.

[edit] Or you can follow my standard operating procedure - squash first and ask questions later.

Ditto, I think it looks like a little wolf spider. RUN! Or squish it.

I caught mine and took it to an entomologist here in campus. Try that.

Or capture him as a pet. Then you can tell people you own a wolf and then just sort of trail off on what specific kind it is. They can grow to be bigguns too, I've squashed a few that have legs spread out from both sides of the shoe.

Definitely not a fiddleback (brown recluse). The picture is blurry, but after living in Oklahoma for 3 1/2 years (I killed 3 a week and found them in my shoes at times), I can ID one from a distance. It looks like a house spider or something else harmless.

And it'd be pretty cool to have another three pairs of legs when the first pair tires...! :D
