Foo - I've got a question:

I've noticed a little statistical phenomenon: Does BF seem to have a higher proportion than average of Math/Science people on it than the average internet forum? It seems the only place I run across a similar proportion is on various mailing lists like Transhumanist.org, or a Quantum Physics forum I've been known to use for early reference seeking.;)

I'm not saying this is bad, either, I actually like the mix here!:D

I hate math. But I'm always impressed with those who are good at it.

I'm not sure. I don't know that I'd be considered a Math/Science person. Not that I'm incompetent, but that isn't my profession.

We do have a lot of 59'ers though. :D

Im a musician, so math isn't my favorite subject. 1/128th notes is as far as i like to take fractions.
I did take stats and biz calculus for the business degree though.

I think I throw that off slightly in the favor of non-math/science.

I think we tend to create or notice patterns whenever our awareness to a particular set of factors is raised.

Well, maybe it just where I live, but aside from a few people who have taken one too many clunks to the head, I haven't met a stupid mtb'er.

I have the same impression.

Same thing in my bike club. Mostly engineers and engineering/natural sciences students (I'm one of them!).

nah, I just fall under the jack-of-all-trades option. When I was growing up, if something broke, you didn't have neough cash to pay for a new one or repairs, so you had to fix it yourself.

That kind of environment will make a mechanic/electrician/computer tech/plumber/woodworker/metalworker/cook/whatever hybrid out of you.....I'm not great at many of these (computers is my specialization), but good enough to keep things going smoothly.

El Guapo, I know that I, Jefe, do not have your superior intellect and education, but could it be that once again, you are angry at something else, and are looking to take it out on me?

Im rather decent at math, but natural sciences are not my strong point. I think its a problem of self selective sampling. The amount of people who visit this board is quite large so there are bound to be an amount of people who know about science and math and they respond accordingly to posts on such topics.

when you factor in how much real bicycles cost

I've noticed the same thing myself and attributed it to the above factor. I think another factor is when a thread smacks of math and or engineering/science most people get a headache and shy away from the thread leaving the rest of us to respond. 85,000 members, 16000+ active there's bound to be more than a few of us hanging around.

It seems a fair population seem to be in the Math/Science that Tom describes.. I have found epicski forums to be likewise.. A lot of software people too which is pretty understandable..
