well,i have been for 5 rides on my new clyde mobile -the schwinn varsity -circa 57 or 67 - and,the difference is crystal clear. this is truly a great clyde bike for me. no groaning or creaking parts,no pops or pings, that make the hairs on the back of my neck stand up. just the sound of my tires on pavement,my chain and, drivechain smoothly humming away and,the wind rushing by my head.:D
saturday i was out and,my chain popped aloose.i had taken it apart,to paint the frame. i told myself, GO TO WALMART AND,PUT A NEW CHAIN ON THIS BABY. BUT NO. I have become so big headed of my ability to fix my bikes, that i convinced myself to clean and, reuse the original chain. stupid of me. new chain on,problem solved.
this frame is awesome.just as solid as a peterbilt truck. i think im gonna remove the kick stand from the bike. its loose and, when i use it. the bike looks like its 1 foot off of the ground.
but the ride is so sweet and,it seems like nothing makes the bike nervous or twitchy. i didnt realise it ,but the other day i was standing in the pedals going up hill.and the bike didnt make 1 sound in protest. when i got to the top i was overjoyed. not for a minute did i feel like i was gonna snap something in 2 peices.
NOW FOR THE DOWN SIDE. 1. The steel wheels. while providing, incredible, incredible strength, are diaper messers when going downhill in the rain. i had forgotten this little nugget from my childhood.but these rims are a clydesdale killer when wet. i dont know how fast i was going.but a good clip, because i was feeling it and, when i grabbed some brake - AND HEARD THAT WET STEEL WHEEL HOWL,IT ALL CAME BACK TO ME,IN A FLASH.I had both brakes on and,got out of the saddle and,did the FRED FLINTSTONE. sitting on the bike frame with both feet braking me.
so i called my bike shop and,he tells me that he has some pads, that are excellent for the old 27 x 1 1/4 wheels. those old pink dia compe pads are outta here.
the one thing that i love, that i didnt think i would,IS THE 1 PIECE CRANK. I had to get some ugly pedals to fit it. but the crank is just as solid as it could be.i cant feel any flex to it and, i have been putting some torque to it.
well anyway, thats my report for those who asked me. yes i have ridden it and,it appears to be bombproof.
if that changes,i will let you guys know. keep on pedaling baby.;)
