OK
Long time lurker,
first time poster.

I used to commute about 3days a week 33mi rt.
I was in an accident head on w/ a SUV at 30-35mph.
Took a left hand turn right infront of me then stopped
when they saw me coming down the hill.
neways I was fine but bike is still questionable 2months later.
I had it looked over by mechanics and they said it was sound
well now the chain has started to rub the front der.
I took it into have it looked at to see if it just neeed ajustment
but you can see clarly all 3 chainrings look bent. They waver as the crank is turned in unisin. @ the lbs they said I need a new spider to fix this $70 for parts and $15 labor easy to fix. To me it seems a little odd that the chainrings could all be bent in the exact same way. Could it be that like the bb is tweaked causing the whole thing, there was no mention of bb @ the lbs. Please help me Dx.

thanks for your time all,
Joseph

The spider is the crankarms, which hold the chain rings in place. I'm assuming the crankarm itself got bent in or out which is causing this. You are correct something like this could be caused by a bent axle in the BB also. THey would probably make more in labor from replacing a BB then a crank arm so I would assume they checked that.

I hope they do not simply assume the problem is a bent crank arm, charge you to replace it, and then find out that the problem really was a bent spindle, instead. Ask them to spin and inspect the spindle before installing a new crank/spider.

Is this something that I can take a look at myself,
I am not a big bike guy but I am very handy and can fix things.
Or is this better left to the lbs.

Check out parktool web site they have directions how to remove the crank and BB, it is not a difficult task. But it does require special tools to do it a crank puller and BB remover. I can't think of a easy way to find out which one is bent, I guess you could switch the sides the crank arms are on and see if it is the same but this would not be a definate answer though.
