Hello,

I bought a 74 Varsity from a garage sale to play around with and hopefully not tear up. Well, I have taken off the rear derailleur now and can't remember how it looked before I took the pulleys off. I should clarify, I didn't take the entire RD off, just the pulley cluster.

Is there any website or something with a diagram of what this cluster should look like? My main problem is the spring on the guide pulley, I'm not sure what it should connect to. I have found some RD diagrams, but not for an old bike.

This is a complete newbie question, I just got the bike to learn about stuff like this, so please take it easy on me. I know, I know, next time I'll draw it up before taking it apart.

Thanks,
Drew:crash:

Don't draw it next time, that's what digital cameras are good for!

Can't help you other wise. can you post a picture of it?

no..... I don't have a digital camera. That sounds like good justification for getting one approved by the accounting dept(wife):D . I'm going to mess with it some more tonight, maybe I could give a better description then.

Keep in mind-the springs on modern derailleurs will twist the jockey wheels in a clockwise direction, and the entire derailleur towards the back of the bike. This keeps the chain in tension.

OK, I've pretty much resigned myself to taking the bike to the LBS to straighten this out, but I thought I'd give it another shot here first.

On the guide pulley there is a spring, and there is also a hole for one side of the spring to set in. On the other side of the spring, there is a hook that looks like it could hook onto the other bracket on the pulley cluster, but then it would most likely be in the chain path.

I think that I have the brackets assembled right, I didn't take the guide pulley off. If anybody can help, please let me know.

Just a follow up, I found this picture from ebay. The spring I was talking about is shown in the pic, between those two tabs. Anyway, I got everything put back together and took it for a test ride!:D
