What foods do you avoid before a long ride? Send them in!

Here are my no-no's:
- blueberries (they're a ticking time bomb)
- fast food of any kind.

Anything with pastry.

Anything particularly sugary like chocolate, candy, coca cola and such like drinks.

Greasy foods.

All carb sources other than baked potato's, rice (presoaked in warm water for 10 minutes) or pasta.

Cake, icecream. :( No more of that for me! I have 12 lbs to lose before the end of September.

CRAP. anything that is out of the norm and may cause GI distress is what i avoid. i dont really eat fast food, but do enjoy a nice pizza or juicy burger. i would normally avoid these types of greesy foods prior to a big ride. later.

Pastry , does my stomach in..... big time

Red meat takes too long to digest, not that I eat any other time either.

Can you elaborate on this one? I eat blueberries (fresh, frozen, dried) every day, often twice/day.

Sure thing.
I eat blueberries about twice a day as well, and it makes me a very regular customer in the bathroom. It makes me regular enough so that I know the time lapse between visits, however, when it knocks, there's no negociating. It's right now with a capital "N". That's what it does to my system, so I try to avoid them on long rides.
Other than that, mix them with yoghurt and yoghurt bacteria and I'm a happy, happy customer.

You stole my response. :p
My stomach reacts badly to high fat greasy foods. I am also a wee bit lactose intolerant.

+1 I also agree with the dairy. It slows my digest system to a crawl, even the soy milk. I may try rice milk one day.

I eat blueberries every morning. I avoid fat and keep the protein at less than 20% of my calories. Both fat and protein will slow the absorption of carbs. I don't consume dairy products.

I'm not sure I have any no-nos anymore. In April I was driving to a century ride and just lost my mind and stopped by Mickey Ds and got a sausage biscuit with egg and hash browns. Had the best, strongest ride to that point in the year. Have had the same pre-ride meal every long ride since and have had a great year. I've started a new tradition.

Beans. Definitely beans, and lentils, lentil flours too. :)

Hi fiber stuff. Notably whole wheat pasta. That was a very painful mistake I'll never repeat. Whole wheat bread is ok though, I get enough of that, so I'm used to processing it.

Cupcakes or anything made with butter and sugar (my favorite food groups). I made the mistake of eating a cupcake before riding up to Griffith Observatory and felt like a whole cupcake was still sitting in my gut. I barely made it to the observatory and was nauseous and tired afterwards:p.

Sushi. Even with cooked fish in it, its the rice that is the problem, with every water bottle you bloat that much more.

Nothing bothers me. Yesterday 41 miles into a 70 mile ride I made a quick stopped for a chili cheese dog.

Anything greasy. Have to save that for after.

Not too much bothers me either, but I try to avoid too much dairy and protein. I prefer complex carbs before a three hour ride or longer.

Why avoid protein ? I read that some pro's eat a fillet steak as part of breakfast on race day.
